I made a welcome postcard through Vista Print that has the following poem on it:

    Welcome to Third Grade!

I am so glad you are here.
I have made you a bag of goodies
    To help describe our year.
The eraser is to let you know
It is OK to make mistakes.
We will correct and learn from them
    No matter what it takes!
The Smarties say I know you are smart
    And really special, too.
The Lifesavers are there to remind you
That I am here for you.
    The pencil represents the learning
    We will do.
    Third grade can be tough,
But it's a ton of fun, too!
The Laffy Taffy says we will laugh
    While traveling through the year.
This classroom will be your new home-
May we fill it with good cheer!

Really, really corny, I know. And the rhymes aren't quite there, and the rhythm stinks. But the cards are printed and now I have to live with it.

Anyhow, the erasers are 2/9 cents at Walgreens, and the Smarties are about $1 for a bag there as well. Pencils are 8/$1 and the Lifesavers are 79 cents a roll (that's the most expensive one). I don't know where to find the Laffy Taffy yet. I'm sticking it all in the 1 cent pencil boxes from Office Depot (on sale this week). So... each box could be put together for 31 cents, plus the Lifesavers and Laffy Taffy... if you bought the roll, that would bump you just over $1, but if you got the peppermint singles, you could keep the cost down. I think I've seen LT for 5 cents at counters before, I just have to keep my eyes open.

Could be cute to have on desks that first day.

I "borrowed" your idea and gave them to my students yesterday. They were very excited. I had the cards printed from Vista Print (free just shipping), the lifesavers were "sugar free" life savers from Wal-Mart (22 pieces for $1.46), then the smarties, laffy taffy, erasers and pencils were all there also. I put them in brown bags and stapled them shut with the card on the outside.
So thanks Jem for another fantastic idea :)

I can't take credit for this-the poem was posted on some random site. I wish it flowed better-I'll be working on it for next year. I need to get to Walmart for the Laffy Taffy!!

Cute! I usually give a bookmark as well and say that we will do a lot of reading...so, I'm trying to see how that can fit in the poem.

I've been looking everywhere for just plain lifesavers! All I can find are the mint ones. What is this world coming to, when you can't find lifesavers?

I make "second grade survival bags." The idea is from a K teacher at a former school. I use a white lunch bag with a cute welcome piece of clip art. Inside are the goodies and the following letter---

You are starting Second Grade. It is an exciting time and maybe
a little scary-even for the teacher! I put together this "Second Grade Survival Kit" for you. I am looking forward to getting to know you. We have lots to learn!

Starburst: You will be a shining star in school if you smile and
    always do your best.
Eraser: Remember, it's okay to make mistakes. That is how we
    learn!
Pencil: We will have fun writing!
Bookmark: We will read lots of great books!
Stickers: We will always stick together and help one another.
Smarties: You are going to learn SO much in Second Grade!
Lifesavers: I am here to help you. Don't be afraid to come to
    me if you need something.
Penny: To remind you that you are a valuable member of our
    class.

I love it! I doubt I can use it due to our health policy (I hate our health policy!!) but you never know. Maybe if I send it home, and it is not consumed at school....

Great ideas - thanks for sharing! (I will definitely steal it )

And as for health policies...I hear ya. I tell the parents at open house that if they have a problem with little treats here and there to let me know. Otherwise, I typically ignore some of the rules. I know...shame on me.
