Hello everyone! I'm a general education 1st grade teacher. This year I have 3 fully included students with special needs-- two are classified as autistic, and one is ADHD and ODD. This is my first time working with children with autism and ODD, and I was looking for some websites with great strategies. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!!! (BTW- I do have an in-class support professional with me for the entire day, and a special education teacher coming in to team teach 3 periods a day).
It is great that you are looking for ideas, and have the support of other professionals in the classroom! That is the way to set your kids up for success. This is a great site giving info on how to set up a classroom to meet needs of students with autism (would work well for ODD as well). Obviously, since you're in a regular ed class, you could take bits and pieces of these ideas to do what works for you and your students. http://www.specialed.us/autism/structure/str10.htm Some ideas and reasons for using visuals in the classroom: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,541400,00.html These are ideas for setting up an autism classroom - but there are some very good points that you could take and use in a regular ed classroom: http://www.thewatsoninstitute.org/resources.jsp?pageId=2161392210281125404854980 Some sample visual supports and ideas: http://www.setbc.org/pictureset/ A website where you can create a customized behavioral report card (either for student monitoring or reporting to parents) http://www.jimwrightonline.com/php/tbrc/tbrc.php (You can make smileys, numbers, yes, no, etc. and have the child fill it out throughout the day, or you can fill it out at the end of the day and review it with the child....helps with monitoring behaviors) Just to name a few! If you have any specific issues, I can direct you to other sites. Good luck - and great work being proactive!
