I did an early morning run to Stop and Shop for my Thanksgiving stuff. The cashier told me that they may go out on strike Monday morning. They're still negotiating (and I have no idea what it's about) but the possibility remains. It also seemed that several cashiers had either called in sick or forgotten to set their alarms. If you're counting on doing your Thanksgiving food run at Stop and Shop, you may want to do it today. Oh, and check out the forecast for this week while you're at it...this could be an interesting week for people who wait till the last minute to get their Thanksgiving goodies.
Yep. It could do a job on the Thanksgiving Day parade Those balloons won't fly if the winds are too high.
We're going out to a restaurant to eat so I don't have to worry about the groceries but I will give my Mom a heads up.
Ugh, I have to drive 5 hours on Wednesday after work. At least my company has a fairly nice work-from-home policy. I do my shopping at Shoprite, though I do love the little price gun Stop and Shop has.
I wonder if that applies to all stores with different names under the Stop and Shop corporation. We have local stores that are named something else but are owned by Stop and Shop. Better pick up those last minute items now.
Honestly, I have no idea whether it's a national thing or just something local. But I had the store to myself at 6:30 am today, and I'm glad I got it done.
Looks like it is in my area too. Guess if they strike and I need something I will just use the competitor's store. It is less convenient for me but available.
I still need a ham and rolls. I have a turkey, so can make it without a ham. I can bake rolls if I have too.
Dh has a shopping list for Wednesday...breads and salad. My In laws arrive Wednesday and leave Saturday so it's more than just the Thanksgiving meal we are planning. Dh is calling them today about the weather forecast and there were high winds last night as well as a dusting of snow in some nearby towns. Travel safely if you are visiting, all!
Yeah, the wind has been incredible for the past 8 or 9 hours... I heard it howling last night. So parts of LI are under both a wind advisory and a Red Flag (high fire potential) warning. My main concern is for Wednesday-- that nor'easter will kill the Red Flag, but will also coincide with a lot of college kids driving home.
Shopping is nearly done! We hit the grocery store last night, where I forgot peppers, crackers, and dried cranberries. Still need to hit the liqueur store and the fish market. A raging storm on Thanksgiving sounds cozy. As long as the electricity is on... We're slated to be cool(ish) and sunny.
Even if we lost power on Thanksgiving, it would be OK, though it could get very cold very fast. (One of my sisters lives 20 minutes away, and she has a fireplace, so mom would be OK. the rest of us would just cope, as so many did last year.) But Wednesday is when so many are out on the roads. College kids in particular tend to have less experience behind the wheel, combined with a feeling of invincibility-- a dangerous combo.) On a much lighter note, the ballooons for Thursday's Macy's parade won't fly if the winds pass a certain level. What a shame for so many people who have planned a trip to NYC for months just to see that parade.
There are storms also headed west with plummeting temps. 8 have been killed in four western states as a result of high wind issues, etc. be safe, all!
I know they are saying chance of snow here. Hubby went shopping. Our plans are up in the air my gram is in hospital!!! But we are prepared to do our own!!! I think we have 3 turkeys in freezer!!! Hubby is making manicotti today!!! YUMMY!!!!
Years ago a balloon hit a street light and showered glass and metal down on parade watchers. Some were taken to the hospital...They have since decided sometimes on no balloons or flying them very low. I can't recall a totally cancelled parade. Check this link for parade mishaps: http://www.womansday.com/life/holidays/8-macys-thanksgiving-day-parade-mishaps-100865 Turns out the parade was cancelled during WWII.
There is a great, fairly new book out about the parade - Balloons Over Broadway, by Melissa Sweet. My second graders loved it when I read it last week.
Current wind advisory in my area: NORTHWEST 15 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 45 MPH. * TIMING STRONGEST WINDS WILL END THIS EVENING. * IMPACTS DOWNED TREE LIMBS AND ISOLATED POWER OUTAGES. *PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS A WIND ADVISORY IS ISSUED WHEN SUSTAINED WINDS OF 31 TO 39 MPH OR GUSTS OF 46 TO 57 MPH ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. WINDS THIS *STRONG CAN MAKE DRIVING DIFFICULT ESPECIALLY FOR HIGH PROFILE *VEHICLES. USE EXTRA CAUTION. *
And the red flag advisory of which Alice spoke: RED FLAG WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM EST THIS EVENING *FOR CONDITIONS FAVORABLE FOR THE RAPID SPREAD OF WILDFIRES AFFECTED AREA LOWER HUDSON VALLEY NEW YORK CITY LONG *ISLAND NORTHEAST NEW JERSEY AND SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT. * WINDS NORTHWEST 15 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS UP TO 45 MPH. * RELATIVE HUMIDITY AS LOW AS 20 PERCENT. * TIMING WINDS WILL DIMINISH AND RELATIVE HUMIDITY VALUES WILL *INCREASE THIS EVENING. * IMPACTS RAPID FIRE SPREAD IF IGNITION OCCURS. *PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS A RED FLAG WARNING MEANS THAT CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS *ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. A COMBINATION OF STRONG WINDS LOW *RELATIVE HUMIDITY AND DRY FUELS WILL CREATE EXPLOSIVE FIRE *GROWTH POTENTIAL. *
As to the parade being cancelled, it would have to be incredibly bad. But a moderately bad nor'easter would ground a lot of the balloons. There are people who plan for a year or two to be at the NYC Thanksgiving Day parade. In order to book a hotel room on the parade route, you have to guarantee 2 or 3 nights. I looked into it a few years ago; it would have been ballpark $1000 for the hotel alone. What a pity if the balloons, the biggest draw of the parade, don't fly. On a more serious note, I was just talking to one of our alumni. She was at the play, will drive back to school tonight, then back for the alumni mass on Wednesday. I warned her about the storm and told her that making it back for mass is NOT worth her life-- I want her taking it slow!!! Her mom nodded in that "I told you so!!!" type of way, then thanked me.
20% humidity and high winds? Golly, that sounds like what, in my neck of the non-woods, we call a Santa Ana. May the weather change before all Hades breaks loose as it did here in 2004 and again in 2007.
It's Alex's birthday on Tuesday and I was planning/hoping to drive out after work to deliver a birthday cake (he's just under 90 minutes away). They're calling for blowing snow, though, so the cake may need to wait a couple of days.
Remember that Red Flag warning? From www.news12.com : BAY SHORE - At least 150 firefighters from 20 departments are battling a mulch fire in Bay Shore. The fire is burning at an industrial park near Corbin Avenue and Fourth Street. The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning about the dry, windy conditions that can cause wildfires to spread faster than usual. Two firefighters have suffered minor injuries. Smoke has hampered visibility in the area, and several roads are blocked off."
