I went to Wal-Mart today and noticed a few school things already on sale: Crayola crayons: 0.20 Rose Art crayons: 0.10 Loose-leaf paper: 0.50 Elmer School Glue: 0.20 Elmer Glue Sticks: 0.20 There were a couple of more items that I don't remember. I don't know if this is just in my area or not, though...
I too have noticed the sales, but our tax free days are not until Aug. so I waiting until then. Last year I purchased all of my supplies for an awesome price.
Some states have a sales tax holiday for back to school. That day no one has to pay sales tax on back to school purchases!
It's really great! For three days the state waives sales tax on clothes, shoes, school supplies, and some electronics for school such as computers.
Hey, AZKinder, you do have tax free days (Aug. 4-6). http://www.window.state.tx.us/taxinfo/taxpubs/tx98_490/tx98_490.html I have not gone shopping on tax free days. I hate crowds, especially crowds with a lot of strollers .
thats the same sale we have and I hope it last for a while so that I can load up on stuff too. I didn't get enough crayons and glue or pencils last year, I am going to stuff my supply closet full this time!!!
Do you have to sign up for to get items on the tax free day because I stay in Chattanooga,TN and I can get to Georgia in 15 min.
You do not have to sign up. The tax free days are for the public. You don't even have to have children to enjoy it -- you just need to make sure the item you purchase is tax free (shoes, clothing, school supplies, computers...).
The tax free days in Georgia is from Aug. 3- Aug. 6th. Here is a link to what you could get. http://www.etax.dor.ga.gov/salestaxholiday_2006/sth2006faq.shtml#whenstholiday
Are you really!!! I haven't thought of going that early, but maybe I will.... I have to be up at 4:45 am though, but I think I will go the day before and make a list of everything that I will buy. GREAT IDEA!! Do you know if Ipods will be tax free?
DZH494 - Tennessee is having a tax-free weekend this year too!! You can go to this website to get the details on exactly what will be tax free. It is the same weekend as Georgia's. http://www.state.tn.us/revenue/hottopics/salestaxholiday.htm
Usually I get up really early in the morning on TFD, but pre-planning starts that week, so to avoid the crowds I will be there. I'm not sure about Ipods though.
Florida has tax-free time also, but there's price limits on certain items, like $100 jeans are not tax-free. Our sales tax is REALLY high (7%) though, so I always take advantage of it. (Which I think is a good idea. People who can spend $100 on a pair of shoes don't need a $7 break on them.)
I realize the prices are great at Wal-Mart now - but as school inches closer the prices only decrease. Last year I bought several 12 pack Crayola Coloring Pencils for 17 cents. That's just stupid!
Hmmm...I'm searching for Louisiana, but so far only finding tax-free shopping for foreign visitors. Would be nice, though! I do have our school's tax-exempt number and I'm able to use it on larger purchases at Lowe's and WalMart. Guess I shouldn't be too greedy, huh?
Please don't shop until you drop during the free tax week...after reading the information the link that I have posted. I guess I will shop each day instead of purchasing everything one time.. http://www.myflorida.com/dor/tips/pdf/tip06a01-04_tax_exempt_items.pdf
It is different for each state. I believe in Georgia, you could get an item of clothing that is $100 or less and there is no limit on how much you can spend. Each school supply item cannot cost more than $20. I do hope binders are on sale, I need 4 of the largest ones and they are so expensive .
Now I am just darn jealous a spending limit of $100, now I am more convinced that I will be moving next year....well you guys who has that great limit....happy shopping My shopping bells are ringing now and I am ready.
I am going to stock up this year. Last year I had to buy folders in the middle of the year and the price difference was crazy!!
I don't think we have those limits exactly in NC. I know there's a limit for the clothes-such as each article can't cost more than $100. As far as school supplies, I don't think there are any limitations.
I just asked the bookkeeper for the tax number, and I use it anytime I buy stuff for work. I bought four boxes of spiral notebooks at Wal-Mart today since they were 10 cents. It's worth spending $9.60 of my own money to save my sanity. I can never get all the kids to bring in a notebook by the second day of school when we need them, so I started buying them myself. My parents and my in-laws also buy me stuff for the class. My parents are going to buy pencils this year. My in-laws buy tissues.
I am waiting to buy my new computer until tax free weekend. I figure the savings in tax will be enough to allow me to buy a couple of other things that I need for the classroom.
Thank you so much TeachingnTennessee. I will go to the one in Tennessee. This may be a little off topic, but I will be teaching for the first time this school year and was wondering about things that I would need.
Last year I found the pocket charts in the back to school section. They were near other teacher supplies. I believe they had some posters, bookmarks, stickers and window clings. I think I paid $9.97.
They have just begun putting out the school supplies at my SuperWalmart. I did see the pocket charts out with the teacher stuff today when I went. FYI...I bought eight 3-drawer organizers to use as math tool kits. They were on sale for a little over $5.
My Wal-Mart had two different kinds of pocket charts. One was a table top one and had cards with it. It was $6.97 I think. The other was a larger blue one that you hang and it was $9.97. It was in the back to school section. There were bb boards, name plates, awards, die-cuts and they were still putting things out. I have to go back tomorrow, so I will see if they put anything else out!!
I just purchased several notebooks, and I maybe spent $3.50 at the most. I also purchased the clasp folders, because I always need those at the beginning of the school year. The class gets a homework folder on the first day every year.
Oh darn, California with 7.75% is not on the list. Just another reason I can not wait to be living in GA!
