I am a new VPK teacher and I am confused as to what my schedule should look like for a 3-hour day. I should be focusing on early literacy, but should this be geared toward academics or more free centers? Also, i'm a full-time teacher. So does that mean my planning time starts at 12:30pm when they move to another classroom for nap-time? Right now I am co-teaching the deaf and hard-of-hearing kids that are also part of my classroom. They stay awake and after lunch the deaf educator and I split the group to teach language and math. Should I be doing this, or is my planning time supposed to start when my VPK kids go to nap? Alicia, VPK should be a developmentally appropriate prek program with lots of time to play in a well-planned environment. Literacy activities can be incorporated into all centers and reviewed with songs and stories during transitions. As for planning time ... that different from program to program. Definately need to talk to your administrator about that!
VPK requires 1/3rd of the time be free play. So that would be an hour of free play during your program.
