I finally signed a contract with a virtual school. Training starts next week and I have no idea what grade except it will be somewhere in K-5. College did not prepare me for this, but I am excited!:woot:

That is so cool! I didn't even know that such a thing existed for elementary!

Awesome! I'm doing an eLearning certificate right now and hope that eventually I can do something similar.

All I know is that it is brand new for my state, but other states have had it for a while now. The parents have to be committed to their child's education for it to work.

Interesting! I wonder if NY has anything like that?! Especially with some of the districts cutting back on teachers- a nearby school to me is going to have 45 students in each k-6 class?!?!! That is insane!

Who pays for this? The parents?

It seems like education is moving more in this direction, or at least opening up the options in this way. Congratulations. Employment is a wonderful thing. :)

Thank you everyone, I am very happy to be employed.

45 students per class is crazy for a regular classroom, but in the virtual world I hope it is not too bad. I have heard that there can be 50 - 60 students to a virtual classroom.

The state actually pays for everything. The school is a public school and receives state funds just like other schools. The teachers are all state certified and the students are required to follow the state curriculum and take state tests. Attendance also follows state guidelines. I have been told that I will meet the students during the year and we will even have field trips (these are not mandatory).

    Congrats on the job!

Catnfiddle teaches at an online school. She'll probably be a great resource if you have any questions (and I'm sure she doesn't mind me volunteering her).

WOW! Welcome to the 21st Century. My daughter took a virtual class in high school while attending her regular ed. program because she wanted to take another language. My niece (high school) goes solely to virtual school. She will still graduate with her regular graduating class, but takes all her classes online. It is a brave new world out there!

Congratulations! I was going to do the same thing, but then I got offered a job at a middle school in my county. I decided it was better for me, so I accepted the position. However... I think you can do some great stuff virtually teaching! :) So hooray for you!

I'd love to be of service. I'm going into my fourth year of teaching online and really adore the new set of opportunities and challenges. The main thing I can tell you now, especially with elementary school kids, is to get comfortable in front of a web camera and on microphone. You'll get a lot of backup from parents, but you're going to be in front of those kids in your own way.

Have a great start to the year. Remember that this is a new frontier of education / technology. Things will break and go wrong. Lie back, point your toes and go with the flow.

Thanks everyone, I have already been very busy. All of the HR paperwork and training is online. I cannot believe it. I just found out yesterday I will be a 4th grade teacher and we loop with our kids, K-2 & 3-5. I am very excited!

Catnfiddle, I may definitely pick your brain.
