There is a God, and He wants me to be a math teacher. I simply have no other explanation for the last few days.

Over the weekend, I found out that I got a near-perfect score on the Praxis II Math. I hoped the score would be high enough to wow prospective employers, but the one mistake will hopefully keep me from getting too cocky. I finally believed it when the Recognition of Excellence certificate showed up in the mail on Monday.

Also on Monday I got a call from a correspondence school in Illinois wanting to set up an interview. I had answered a blind ad in the local newspaper, and after speaking with the principal, I was able to look up the school online. We scheduled the interview for this morning (Wednesday, April 22nd).

So today I went over into Illinois for the interview. They have 40,000 students, and among their alumni are Donny and Marie Osmond, Jessica Alba, Andre Agassi, and Eragon author Christopher Paolini. They offered me a job grading their geometry exams. :thumb: I accepted.

When I got back to my car, there was a message for me. The charter school I interviewed with last month has made their hiring decision. They want me to teach math there full-time in the fall! :thumb: They gave me a list of supporting documentation to send them, and then they will give me an "intent to hire" letter.

After I got home, I got a phone call from the Dean of the Catholic school whose summer math program I am teaching. She wants to know how soon I can be out there to sign the contract. I have to go there tomorrow for a training session anyway, so... :thumb:

That's three (count 'em, :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: three!) offers I've gotten in the past 2 weeks. Looks like I'm set for the foreseeable future.

Thank you--all of you--for your support and wisdom these past few months. :hugs:

    Newly Hired MathManTim

When I spoke with the principal, she said that they were considering developing a math course for seniors who have completed Algebra 2, but who do not yet seem ready for Pre-Calculus. She said all teaching assignments for next year are up in the air until they figure out what, if anything, they're going to do. She said, though, that I would definitely know before the end of this school year in early June.

Not at the moment, but my 33rd birthday is this Sunday, the 26th, so I'm sure I'll find something. In particular, there is a very high probability that somewhere around here is a bottle of The Glenlivet 18 year old Single Malt Scotch Whisky...

    Indeed it is! :D

    All of them. ;)

Seriously. The geometry job runs MWF only, and starts immediately. I'm teaching Pre-Algebra on Tuesdays and Thursdays for only 6 weeks starting in mid-late June. When it comes time to teach in the fall, the Pre-Algebra job will be long over, and I'll have to quit the geometry job due to scheduling conflicts.

Thanks for your confidence, but I must confess that I was led to believe by the local principals that because I am not fully certified, my resume essentially would go to the bottom of the stack, regardless of my education. Seeing how many people turned out for the job fairs, I gave myself at best 1 chance in 4 at landing a position for the fall, and even then, I figured I would be a last minute hire.

Thank God for charter schools and their relative freedom in hiring people compared to the other public school districts.

    Tim,

Do you want me to take a look and see if I have any Pre-Algebra or Geometry Resources?

I know I have a GREAT geometry sheet on circles-- for the chapter on inscribed, central and other angles. It's a huge circle with about 25 different angles/arcs to find.

I can't scan it, but would be happy to send you a copy if you think you'll be able to use it. Give me the weekend and I can see what else is in my files.

The Geometry course is pretty much set in stone. Mostly, I'll just be grading exams that have been mailed in and offering helpful comments.

Who knows, though, what I'll be teaching in the fall. I'll be happy to see what you've got!
