So you teach sixth grade science and you designate Kelly as "Mad Scientist of the Week" based on behavior and work. She gets her picture taken in a funny costume, a certificate, and a little knick knack. In social studies she does something inappropriate but not office-worthy and that teacher takes her certificate and knick knack and declares she's no longer Mad Scientist of the Week. Thoughts?
I would be personally ****** and try to address it with the teacher in question, but I don't think I'd mention it to the student.
Not cool unless you have agreed as a team that the student must behave in all classes or they may lose their Mad Scientist title.
Ask the social studies teacher if it would be alright for the traffic cop to void his teaching certificate as punishment for speeding. I'm thinking he'll say no.
So, what will you do if this student's parent contacts you about the incident.... You will have a quandary on your hands. Either support the other teacher or support your beliefs.
I think that's clear. If I were in that situation & the parents called, (first of all, I'd have given her back her prizes, had a long talk with the other teacher about boundaries, and admonished the student about her misbehavior in the other class) I'd explain to the parents that there had been a misunderstanding & how we'd handled it. Depending on the parent, I might also apologize on behalf of my colleague.
That is completely clear, but that doesn't mean the parent won't contact you to see if you were aware that the award was taken from the student you gave it to or if removal of the award for misbehavior was part of the policy with the award.
I guess I'm confused since I'm not sure what being a "Mad Scientist" has to do with social studies. Is this a seperate class? Or the same class just different subjects?
There is no connection between the two. One teacher gave a reward, and another teacher took away the first teacher's reward for something that happened in the second teacher's classroom. It would be like a teacher walking into someone else's classroom and changing a student's behavior chart from green to yellow.
Was there specific criteria for the award such as "the student must maintain exemplary behavior throughout the whole day in order to maintain award", etc?
