I just took the VCLA and I think I did horrible. Does anyone know if 71 and 77 percent are passing?

VCLA's a basic skills test. The passing scaled score for each subtest is 235 on a scale from 100 to 300 - in other words, there are 200 points available and you need 135 of them. 135 is 2/3 of 200... so your chances are not bad, though I'm not guaranteeing anything.

so your saying 77% on both the reading and writing are ok scores? are they bad scores?

It doesn't work by percentage. I'm guessing that each question is weighted differently, and that there's some strange scaling done based on percentages and averages. You can usually find the scoring information if you dig enough.

I hope so do you know how long it takes for the scores to come in the mail?

It doesn't work by percentages, true, and different editions of the test will contain questions that are weighted differently - but experience tells me that, for teacher tests as a class, 2/3 of available points tends to be enough.

So honestly do you think 77% on both test is a good percentage to have on the MC part of both subsets? Also do you know how long it takes to get the scores posted online?

If the subtests are both only multiple choice, 77% is fairly likely to work for you.

The VCLA page with test dates should also tell you when scores go online.

Not sure, sorry, I was going to ask if anyone knew if 88% reading and 85% writing on the unofficial one was passing? I just took it, they haven't had a chance to grade the short answer/writing that I did.

I'm guaranteeing nothing, mind you - there's not a direct relationship between raw scores and scaled scores - but if you were NOT to pass, it would surprise me deeply.

Oh, and welcome to our playground. What are you planning to teach?

Did you pass mspv124??? I got the same scores but feel I did fairly well on my essays... I hope.

I'm really worried because I studied really hard for this but I am dyslexic so reading and test taking is very dificult for me and not to mention I don't have the money to take it again. I don't even want to teach english but rather math.

Please let me know if you passed

If accommodations are available to you, Kindness, there's no shame in taking advantage of them.

Hello,

I just finished the VCLA and scored an 88% on the reading and a 60% on the writing is there a way to know I passed?

Not yet, because your writing hasn't been scored yet. The 88% in reading is very promising, however.

I took the VCLA reading test only today, and received a print out of my unofficial score. It was a 77%...its bugging me to know whether that is passing or not. If anybody could help, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Dear Teachers:

I took VCLA today. I got an unofficial 80% on the reading subset and 85% on the writing subset. Additionally, I couldn't attempt the essay and the composition part, in the writing subset.

Can anyone share an educated guess, as to how will I square in the final scores--pass or fail?

Thank you,
Studyforteacher

80% on the reading subtest is respectable and 85% on the multiple-choice part of the writing subtest is strong. From what you've written, however, it seems that you attempted neither of the writing tasks in the writing subtest. According to the score report explanation at https://www.va.nesinc.com/Content/Docs/VCLA_ISR_Explanation.pdf, the two writing tasks together count for 50% of the writing subtest: leaving both blank amounts to giving away half of the available points on the test, and that would make it pretty hard to pass.

Dear Moderator:
Thank you for your insight. This leads me to the conclusion, that I might have to retake the writing subtest . I don't remember exactly but I read it somewhere, that the two writing sections are equivalent to 20% of the test. And the grammar and mechanics five questions are equivalent to 5% of the test. Which leaves us to 75% of the test that being: the multiple-choice section. ( I have no proof to support my claim)

Nonetheless, I have no other choice than to wait for the official result.

Thank you once again for your time,
Studyforteacher

The pdf to which I linked, which is on the VCLA website, explains it this way:

"For the Writing subtest, the multiple-choice and short-answer items account for 50 percent of the total subtest score, while the response to the Summary assignment accounts for 20 percent and the response to the Composition assignment accounts for 30 percent of the total subtest score." I think that's fairly clear.

Welcome to A to Z, Goldie317.

Whether you'll have passed will depend on information we don't have yet, which is to say the writing tasks. Keep us informed, please.
