It's not duh, everyone forgets that stuff if they aren't teaching it! They retrain us in it all the time, too! :haha: I'm not kidding, every few months it comes up in our trainings. I do this as a whole-class activity with every selection because if I don't, I know my kids will forget it (keeps me fresh, too ). It helps them a lot with their decoding skills and it only takes a few minutes.
I have to remind myself about fractions all the time. I tell ya I never understood them as well as I do now that I have to teach them. OY!
I was actually just thinking yesterday, that 5th grade math is really as much as I ever use... I would never tell my students that, because of course you want them to become engineers and math teachers, but it struck me that for the majority of my daily math experiences outside of school, 5th grade covers the basics.
Ms Froggy, I tell my kids they will use this math every day of their lives, percentages, fractions, decimals. And I tell them they can do any kind of math if they can do 5th grade math. They ask, "Is that why there's a show about being as smart as a 5th grader?"
