Hi there! I'm doing research on using YA in the classroom for grad class assignment. Part of the research process is to discuss one or more topics under this umbrella with teachers, so if you are interested please reply!

What are your thoughts and experiences using YA lit with canonical texts in thematic units or using YA lit to motivate and empower readers?

Have you been challenged to justify the use of YA lit in teaching?

One of the schools I've subbed for in my district uses YA novels. I've noticed that the kids really enjoy it. At this school they do a unit where the kids are grouped up and each group reads a different book. They are given a choice (sort of) of which book to read, they rate which they want to read most and the teachers pick so that the groups are somewhat even but they still get to read what they want. I've seen them get really excited over this and I think the group aspect is really great.
