I can think of several different ways to include a fifth root in a basic-skills question without the question being beyond test takers' plausible competence. Much depends, of course, on what the other answer choices are. 1. Which of the following most closely approximates 7 to the power 1/5? a. 5/7 b. 16,800 c. 7/5 d. -35 A student who understands the general concept of a what a root is - that is, "2 is the cube root of 4" means that 2 is what one multiplies by itself to yield 4 - and who knows some other fundamentals of number theory can eliminate three of those answers: 7 is positive, so its fifth root also has to be positive, so answer (d) doesn't work; the positive root of a positive integer cannot be greater than the positive integer, so (b) is too darn big; the positive root of a positive integer that's more than 1 really can't be less than 1, so answer (a) doesn't work. That leaves answer (c), and all without calculation.

Great Job!, we started back to school, still trying to sneak in math every night, I just took practice test 5 and 6, they are getting harder, up until tonight I was getting done with about 5 minutes to spare and getting my typical 83 %. Will definitely check back in. I will be happy with a 150.
Well this time your studying will pay off. No problem passing at 150! That book is for real! I am guessing you make a 170-180ish since you almost had a 150.I did the skip long problems finish fast ones this time. It worked. If I was taking too long I marked and went back at the end. I couldn't believe how much easier it seemed after studying her book.
I don't think I can improve another 20 or 30 points, I believe I improved that much because the first time I wasn't prepared enough. I'll be surprised if I improve 10 points. Today is the big day, we'll see. Really wish I could have got this done before school started, million things going on in my mind.
You can do this! Before you start your test, take a breather, so slowly inhale and then slowly exhale. Repeat this a few times. It will help calm your nerves. Also, if you have to guess on multiple choice problems, then pick the same answer for each problem. For example, say you have to guess on 5 problems because you ran out of time, then select all B or all C or whatever letter you decide for each question. The probability of getting at least one or more correctly from selecting all B, for example, is greater than choosing a sequence of letters at random (e.g. A, B, B, D, and C). Finally, try remembering questions you saw before on previous tests and study those concepts. Figure out not only what the correct answers are, but WHY they are correct. This last part is key. Good luck! I'm rooting for you!
Hooray! I passed with a 168. I still ran out of time, on # 54. I figured I passed, but didn't think I came up 20 points over last time. Now I can binge on writing essays. Nice to have that one off my plate. If you're struggling with this test, buy DR. Gardner's book.

After failing the praxis multiply times 136-138-140 after spending my summer studying, I did research and found this book. The Praxis Core math subtest is one single chunk of test - that is, you pass or don't pass the whole thing, not the parts, so it doesn't matter where improvement occurs as long as it occurs (and as long as there isn't loss of ground elsewhere in the subtest). You might find it useful to work through Khan Academy's math offerings, starting with content you're pretty sure you know and ending at about the end of Algebra 1 or perhaps high-school geometry. Khan has short videos each of which walks the viewer through one topic, or part of one, in math, and is set up to articulate or link from topic to topic in sensible order. Khan also has sets of practice problems. If Khan's video approach doesn't suit you, try Math is Fun, www.mathsisfun.com. Sixth- to eighth-grade state-test math workbooks can also be helpful. One common kind of question that trips people up is the estimation question: for instance, "Estimate the product of 1,8542.1 and 0.90005." People tend to assume that they should multiply those two numbers together, then round the result. Not so: in fact, the point of estimation is to get a rough ballpark answer by making the math easy to do in one's head, and so one rounds FIRST. 1,8542.1 gets rounded to 2,000 (no decimal point). 0.90005 gets rounded to 1 (again, no decimal point). "Product" means 'the result of multiplication', which means 2,000 times 1, which means 2,000 (and definitely no decimal point). For estimation, always round to the lead digit, bumping up to the next digit to the left if necessary.
I bought the book and failed every practice test in the book. I went ahead with the actual test and received an almost perfect score! This book is no joke!
When I first started studying for the Math portion, I used the Dummies book, ETS, and Kaplan. After 3 weeks of frustration and failing every practice exam offered on the Dummies website, I was feeling highly discouraged until I stumbled upon Dr Lynn Gardner's book. I have been using her book to study for the past week and I have gone from a fail to scoring over a 150 on her practice tests. However, her practice tests seem to get harder and harder each time, and my score is dropping. I have taken Practice Test #1-4 so far and my scores are as follows: #1: 76, #2: 73, 71, #3: 69, #4: 64. I have read in a different thread that the same exact questions in her book are on the Praxis. If you have taken the Math portion recently and used her book to study, what is your opinion on this? Has anyone passed the Math portion the first time upon using her book to study?? My combined Praxis Core test is on Tuesday and my anxiety is going through the roof regardless of putting in 6-8 hours of studying a day.
Hi, did the book help you? I am also using it. I take my exam on Wednesday. I have completed all of the lessons and was able to get over a 150 on the 6 exams. I am out of time so I am going to review 7 through 11 so at least I can see if there are any type of changes. Please let me know how you did. I took it last month and got a 136 . Gardner's book helped break down the problems and made it easier to understand. However, I don't think it helped me as much as I thought it would. I have gone back to using the "Dummies" book because the questions on the test bank are similar. You can PM me if you have any more questions.
Hi, I took the exam yesterday after using Dr. Gardeners book and my score went from 136 last month to 186 with 4 minutes to spare!!!!!!! That is a 50 point increase. She is on point with her strategy. I finished all of the lesson but was only able to complete up to test 5. I ran out of time .
Holy cow! I’ve never heard of a score jump that big before after one attempt from a previously non-passing score. Well done!
I studied every day for hours for 3 weeks, She does point out the particular type of question and their solution.
I take back what I said. Dr Gardner's book is one of the BEST study guides out there. I scored 50 points higher! If you are struggling with math, PLEASE pick up Dr Gardner's book. For reading/writing, I used the Dummies book. Good luck everyone!!!
I just want to say thank you! to whoever created this post and to all the people who responded. without this forum I would have never learned about Dr. Lynn Gardner math guide. I took the praxis core math section two times prior to buying Dr. Garder's guide. The first time I didn't study which was my first mistake. The second time I took the test I studied Praxis core for dummies and Baron's Praxis core guide and I only got a score of 146. I was becoming desperate because I didn't know what to do to raise my score. That's when I found this post and after reading everyones post I decided to take the plunge and buy Dr. Gardners guide. I just retook the Praxis core math section today after studying Dr. Gardners guide for 21 days and raised my score from a 146 to a 178 ( unofficial score). If you aren't good at math and need to take the Praxis core math section "BUY THIS GUIDE!" it is a life saver and I promise you won't regret buying it.
I am going to look this book up. I am totally embarrassed to say I have taken this test 8 times. It is so different every time. I study so hard and math is the only thing holding me back from improving my career. I try and try, but it is like nothing is out there to help prepare me HELP!
