Has anyone done centers in Grade four and up? I tried doing them in grade two and it was a big mess half the time. I think I missed something. Any recommendations?

I taught 1st grade for 6 years and did centers. Last year I moved up to 4th and was very successfull with the centers. Most importantly, the students must be active in the centers and know where they are supposed to be. I use a chart and it shows which group goes where.
    The centers I use are:
    1. spelling contract
    2. reading group
    3. computer (FCAT EXPLORER, AR, etc...)
    4. silent reading in the reading corner
    5. response center (responding to situation or a paragraph) - this is sometimes art or written response.
I sometimes will add in another center or exchange one out if I need the students to do some other type of work.

I have used centers (I call them "Learning Stations") successfully in both 3rd and 5th. Almost any center used in the primary grades can be modified for use in upper grades. The important thing is to model, model, model at the beginning of the year. I spend at least the first 4 weeks of school modeling my expectations during center time. During this time, I do not meet with small groups. I am walking around monitoring students as they do their center work. Each day we have a class meeting about "Good things I saw" and "Things to Work on".
The best book I have found for upper grades is Guiding Readers and Writers Grades 3-6 by Fountas and Pinnell. They outline in detail how to set up Writer's Workshop, Word Study, and Reader's Workshop (of which centers/small groups are a part). This book helped me tremendously in deciding what types of centers to use.
Currently, these are the centers I use:
    Computer Station
    Listening Station
    Buddy Reading Station
    Exploration Station (nonfiction)
    Reading Group
    Independent Reading
    Word Work Station
    Writing Station
    Poetry Station

instead of giving the students exact assignments to do in spelling, you give them choices on a contract. Each activity is worth a certain amount of points. They must get to 100 points by Thursday before the test. Some activites on my spelling contract are
    write words5 times each
write words 2 times each in cursive
type words on computer 3 times each in different fonts and print out
make a word search using your words
    solve a friends word search
write your words in a secret code or scrambled word puzzle
solve someones secret code or scrambled word puzzle
write each word in a complete sentence
write a poem using half of your words

There is a lot more and it is on a chart for the students. Also, each activity is worth either 25, 50 or 75 points. I can email you my spelling contract next week when I get back to school.

I would also love a copy. I think I will use it for homework choices before our Friday test. I don't know how to Private E-mail, though.

I am happy to send anyone that wants the spelling contract but the document is in Appleworks. So you will not be able to open it unless you also have Appleworks.
