I've been in my school 13 years. Everyone knows me, everyone knows my name....and sometimes someone who knows me will call me a different, but similarly sounding name. Kind of like if your name was Mike and people called you Mark.... my P did it recently at a faculty meeting and I said " did you seriously just call me othername?" he hadn't even realized he did it and the funny thing is there are two people named othername in my building! (and my name isn't really common, but othername is) Good luck today, giraffe!
Well, I will know this evening whether or not I will come back for the demo lesson round. I'd be surprised if I don't, but you never know! The principal said at the end of the interview something about 'so much talent out there' to another person on the panel, which means other people impressed her, too. She did say I was a great candidate, so fingers crossed! (I am still worried about pay though I'd take a pay cut to work here, and I was already barely scraping by. Pay scale tops out at $49,000 for a bachelor's, $53,000 with a masters.)
I guess technically, there is a P now. I sort of forced my way into the new STEM charter  I went to drop off a packet, and met the principal. She went ahead and did the round 1 interview on the spot! It is usually a phone interview. It is an extended year school, which is a bit of a bummer. The kids start August 5 and staff on July 20, which means this will be an expedited process. They will be calling to set up a second interview for the week of the 8th. The P kept saying I was a Godsend and came in for a reason... that has to be a good sign, right?
Recap: A- eliminated B- eliminated C- awaiting official openings- in the hiring pool D- eliminated E- eliminated F- pending G- pending H- eliminated I- eliminated J- eliminated K- eliminated L- interview July 1 M- pending N- pending O- 2nd interview July 16 P- 2nd interview week of 8th
Definitely a good sign! The district I messaged you about posted a 4th grade position at the lab school today btw.
Glad to hear that it went well and that you got a second interview at the STEM school by stopping in!
Well, it is official! I will be doing a demo lesson on July 10th! And thankfully, it is math and not reading!!!! I'm a way better math teacher 3rd round is new territory for me!!!

Just curious----will you accept the first offer you get automatically or are you hoping/holding out for a specific one?
Well, this is less than an hour from my family. Pay is a concern. They haven't specifically said they will not pay for my experience, but it was implied. I'm hoping for a 1/2 experience agreement or something. It will take a lot more thought if they only offer 32K. Three years experience would be 36K and my full 6 years would be 41K. Rent will cost $700-900. I've already thought a bit. Someone I used to know very well manages a grocery store not too far from there, so I could easily get part time employment. I just am SOOOOOO tired of working two jobs. I will accept any job in my home county without hesitation. Even $32K because I could go back to my old apartment complex and rent a 1 bedroom for $400 a month, or $600 for a 2 bedroom. And I can count on my mom for some meals
I had to go back in the thread and find out where school N was...it looks like a nice school. Crossing fingers and toes for you!
Ohhhh yeah! Thank God for moms....lol I'm single and live on my own so I completely get what you are saying. Now that I will be full time w/benefits including a Pension plan, I am realllllllly overjoyed. I will still need to keep my part time (bi-weekly or monthly) job though doing surveys/studies for 2 different Research Companies Its extra money for food & gas and I really i don't want to let it go yet, I do enjoy it and I am sure I will need it since its only a TA position. Thank God they started me on step 5..which means a pay increase and they will put me on salary now too--------so no matter how many snow days, late openings, early dismissals my paycheck never changes now!!!! Love that! Well, I hope you get at least half your experience...it makes a huge difference, even a few thousand $$$ more.
It is really low. I was pretty surprised. I figure we'll cross the bridge when it comes. In the meantime, I hope a LOCAL school calls me. If I'm offered a position on the 10th, I figure I can stall for a bit because of the pay. However, it seems like a great, small school. I wouldn't be willing to work for the money in other places.
I also had to go back to see what N school is. I check your post everyday and love how you identify your process for each school. It would be helpful if you had a quick description by the school letter for schools still in the running. How many principals are there for school M?
M had about 12-15 openings. I interviewed with 3 principals, but could be placed in a pool as well. Their HR moves slowly, so I have no idea where I stand. The one P personally contacted me via email to tell me that she chose other people. I figure I would have heard by now if it was positive.
We'll see if this helps. I get confused, too! Recap: A- eliminated B- eliminated C- awaiting official openings- in the hiring pool- large, top rated school that pays REALLY well. 45 minutes. D- eliminated E- eliminated F- pending- Charter. 60 minutes. Start-up. 2nd grade. G- pending- Friend's school. Charter. 80 minutes. H- eliminated I- eliminated J- eliminated K- eliminated L- interview July 1- far- 3 hours +, rural, I think. Not excited. 5th grade. M- pending- Big district. Interviewed 2 rounds. 70 minutes. Pays well. N- 3rd round/demo lesson July 10- 50 minutes. Pays terribly. VERY small school- 2 teachers per grade level. 4th grade. O- 2nd interview July 16- 130 minutes away. Don't know much about them. 3rd grade. P- 2nd interview week of 8th- STEM school- 15 minutes, inner-city, charter start-up, I walked in and got interviewed on the spot.
Thanks! I appreciate the information. Just curious as to which one you would be excited about. I know you just want to be home!
For all of my pending, I would rank them: C M P *if pay is $38K or more N if P's pay is not at least 38K. P is extended school year (11 months), so I'm not sure I'd work for $32K G O F L
Another question I know you want to be back home and of course you want the proper salary for your experience but as far as grade level....does it matter to you? Do you prefer the younger kids; kinder, 1st, 2nd....or would you prefer older primary grades? It seems most are for older kids/grades.
I taught 5th for 5 years, which is why I commonly get called for upper elementary. Last year K-3 wouldn't go near me even though I specialized in early childhood. This is why I had to jump at the chance to teach 2nd, even though it was a mid-year move. And, to keep things easier, I'm vague about moving to second. I just say it was last minute... It was 10000000% voluntary, but it is strange for a teacher to move mid-year within the same school!
I had an interview for L today. 7 hours in a car was not fun I was dreading it. I tried to fake it the best I could, but I still wish I canceled it last week. I can't explain it- I just have a feeling...
Well, if they invite you back, decline. It will clear the way for other teachers who see it as their dream job and location.
Revisiting my anger with my home district- I heard from an insider today that they will not consider anyone who has taught in another state. That explains a lot, and it also doesn't really surprise me.
Well that's stupid. Would they (in Michigan, right?) not hire a Harvard grad who interned in Massachusetts either? Part of being a teacher is being adaptable enough to switch grade levels and curriculums....that just irks me.
Apparently I will move from the "do not hire list" to a "hire with caution" list after I've taught in the state for at least 2 years. I will admit- there are a few things (MLPP and MiBLSi) that I scratch my head over. I've read about them several times, andthey are relatively minor issues in my opinion. MLPP= Michigan Literacy Progress Profile MiBLSi= Michigan’s Integrated Behavior and Learning Support Initiative
Similar kind of junk goes on right here in my county too. They only like to hire "their own" meaning those who grew up right here in the community and who stayed local for college too. Most will also only hire you if you also are kin to someone or have an "in" with someone local. It's nuts! I didn't really believe it until I began subbing full time and everyone in these schools are all interconnected. They all either grew up here in the county or are married to people who did. Most are kin to at least 2-3 other people in the county system etc....one thing is for sure...it's a good ole' boy system around here when it comes to hiring ( happily I will say we are one of the best counties academically in the state) and it's clear I won't be given a shot at anything not being one of the locals since I didn't grow up here and went to school out of state. I'm only seen as good enough to sub, not fully hire. hmy:
It may be unfair, but that's the way it goes. When I was first job hunting, years ago, I lost jobs to a school board member's daughter & the guidance counselor's wife. Those are just the ones that I know I lost out to. I'm always amazed that I have found jobs and have not known anyone.
So they would rather get someone straight out of college with no experience then get a teacher with 6 years of experience?Like you said those 2 things are minor issues - you have experience and I doubt they are that different than what you've experienced in NC, just different terminology. :crosseyed
