Giraffe really needs to compile this thread into book form. Her saga of job searching, job winning, and job disillusionment are must-reads for any new teacher.
giraffe~I'm so happy to hear that your first day was successful!! And sounds like you have a great P in which to impress.
Today was better. Well, 29 kids and myself had a better day. 1 did not, but he is the one I kept hearing about. No surprise I even had my first IEP meeting this morning and actually contributed a few useable suggestions despite knowing the child for 2 days! Friday is Homecoming so it is a half day. I'm really looking forward to it so I can work in the classroom!! Not too late since my school is adjacent to the football field- I'll have to get out before the parade and other festivities begin.
Yay! So glad you are having a great experience so far. I'm sure you will leave a great impression with this school!
So happy your temporary one is a good one. Any chance you'll hear from any other schools in the meantime?
So. True. Yay giraffe! You're out of the hellhole! So, does your step dad know about this new job? Keep letting us know how things are going
I look everyday. I'm not keeping my hopes up because I have not been contacted by anyone since mid-August. Of course I've had to limit my job search to an hour radius. Most schools around here have a lot of nepotism involved with the hiring process. If there is no one to hire that route, they hire long term subs, parapros, or student teachers. They usually know who they are hiring before they even post.
He knows. It was overshadowed by a bunch of family drama that exploded over the weekend. My immediate family is not usually so unstable, but my sister is pregnant and she made my mom very, very upset. So, while it sucked being stuck in the middle, I was relieved that my job change passed by easily
Today I was offered another 12 week LTS in the district. She said at least 12 weeks, so it could be more. It is at a different elementary, and it would start in early February. So I would only day-to-day sub in January. I didn't ask yet, but since she said at least 12 weeks, I'm wondering if there is the possibility of her taking the rest of the year off. Regardless, a current teammate has a friend at that school as well that is due in May. She already gave her my contact info. So I could just end the school year out there, which would be great. Another principal for a reference and more experience in the district. The only problem.... it is kindergarten My bright side- I will have this experience: K- LTS 1- student taught 2- 1 year 3- LTS 5- 5 years Fourth would be the only grade level that I did not have experience in.
Great news! It wouldn't suprise me if we found out sometime in January that your old school closed down because all of the teachers quit LOL
Amazing!!!! This is how you know you made the right choice..all these other doors are now opening to you!!!!! Go with it..its exactly where you should be CONGRATULATIONS
We had a bad ice storm last week. Thankfully we've had power, but we've been without cable and internet until earlier today. I meant to get on here on Friday or Saturday. Let's see.... I had an interview a few weeks back, but I didn't hear anything, so I'm not holding my breath. I was supposed to have an interview for a PT GSRP position (teacher, not assistant). It was scheduled for Friday, but with the ice storm everything was closed. I'm not sure when they are rescheduling. Good news- it is 5 minutes from my house. Bad news- it is only 20 hours a week, and I'm not sure about preschool. But I'd like to be an internal employee for future openings It'd pay the same as regular day-to-day subbing, but I'd only work 20 hours. So we'll see. As for the other LTS, it is still not set in stone. I'm a little annoyed by that. The school has 3 teachers going out on leave- February, March, and May. I obviously want the February or March one. Basically, I have no news
Yes, it is still operating. They still don't have a website, so it makes it difficult to get information. I've tried a few times, but honestly I go weeks without thinking about it. I didn't keep in contact with anyone, so I'm not sure who still works there.
giraffe...you are one of these rare people with a never-ending well of optimism, energy, and talent. The right job is out there for you.
Thanks, swansong. I've been rather down lately. I am terrified to be relying on regular subbing and I've never been the most confident. It's weighing on me terribly. I've been panicking about what will happen if I still don't find a job for NEXT year. The P from my LTS job has been supportive, so hopefully it will eventually lead somewhere.
Giraffe, I received a part time position after LTS (as a Para not a teacher) the Principal called me at home to offer it to me and then at the end of the same year a full time position opened up for the new school year, so I interviewed and I was told in May that I would start full time in August when school was back in session. I am sure for teachers it would not be much different. And my position as a Para actually pays a lot more than my LTS job did and I have FULL benefits..so it does happen Hang in there.
I forgot one pretty big thing- I finally sold my house! Yay for that! (Too bad I lost money- I had to send $1500 to close, but it is done)
My mortgage was about $925 a month, so I am glad the payment is gone. (It was about $840 when I bought the house but my taxes went up.) With all the issues, I stopped paying my mortgage back in September. I didn't want to dump more money into it if I was going to have to let it go into foreclosure. With the permit issues, this was a real possibility. So when I received an offer, I had to catch my mortgage up. Then, closing got pushed back, which caused another payment to be due. I didn't pay it, so technically, $925 of the $1500 was my actual house payment for the month. I know with the market crash, others have it worse. But the house cost me a lot of money over the years. I originally paid $113,600 for the house. It was appraised at $145,000, so I was getting a steal. I put about $12,000 in it right away- it was a foreclosure and the flooring was ripped out, it had no appliances, etc.... Then, the sewage ejector pump died (house was below street level). Add another $2,000. It stopped again a few years later- another $1,000. Other minor repairs over the years- maybe $2,000. So we are now looking at around $130,000 for an investment. I sold for $118,000 and had to pay $3,000 in closing for the buyer. So I really sold for $115,000 and had to pay realtor commissions. The IDENTICAL house down the street with less upgrades (no fireplace, no covered front porch, no deck, etc...) sold for $130,000 in 3 weeks. We listed our houses the same week. The difference? A previous owner did work on the house and was foreclosed on before the final inspection. I went with the advice of my realtor and simply disclosed it. I lost 3 sale contracts because of this, and who knows how many more potential ones that didn't even consider my house. I had to spend several hundred to get the inspections done and I'm really lucky I didn't have to rip floors and walls out like the inspector initially wanted. By the time that was resolved, the house had been on the market for 6 months and was considered stagnant. I had to take any offer I got. Basically, had I gotten the permits handled right away, I could have actually made money. It just shows what terrible luck I happen to have....
That's a great big relief...good for you...i just modified my home mortgage due to loss of pay when I took the Para position--I use to be a Director of the ECE Program. My payment went from almost $1,100.00 a month to $860.00 a month SO GRATEFUL and thank God everyday I could make things work out..there was a period of time a year a go that I didn't think I could keep it. Glad you don't need to worry anymore
We had our house on the market for the last 6 months of the year. had a lousy agent...she showed the house ONE time! We finally got so tired of having to continually contact her to get any response from her. We took the house off the market...my husband still lives there (has been waiting for a transfer) so he will continue to pay down the mortgage and when his transfer comes through we will relist.
I used the same agent I used to buy it with. He really came through in the end by doing almost all the repair work the buyer requested. He only charged me materials. However, I'm disappointed in the advice that we ignore the lack of proper permits. I also wish he would have done an Open House or something. I knew I went with someone I could trust but wasn't a 'shark' type. I wish I had went the other route and sold it faster.
I applied for my first 5 jobs for 2014-2015. I'm surprised to see them posted so soon. They are all in the same district but at different schools. They listed them separately, which is why I will chart them separately. 4 of the 5 are STEM, which is my background, so we'll see. I'm betting they'll get filled internally though. But that would hopefully open up regular classroom jobs
