My sisters' middle names are Sky and Starr, mine is Moon. No, my parents weren't hippies. Did we ever find out how to pronounce that one name? L-ah? If not, I guess "La" just like you would say, la la la. Haha, I dunno. That's the first thing that came to mind. As for unusual names...I have a cousin named Ran. Ya...strange.
I subbed in a school with a bunch of Siobans (Irish or Gaelic I think). I had NO idea how to pronounce it at first and kept forgetting even after they told me. After a few weeks working at that school I was a pro and the girls were so happy I was able to say their names!
Levi is a pretty common name in the Jewish community. It's the name of one of the three original tribes.
This is the nickname for Ivan in Russian -- the equivalent of John. I have a friend with this name. I came across two pretty unusual names in movies the other day. One was Wilhemina and the other was Thaddeus.
My nieces names are Skylar Jade and Stori Lane....My nephew is Saigen Jake..and my other nephew (other side of the family) is Rhys.
My sister is Lida (pronounced like Lyda, not Lee-da). She was named after our great grandmother. My cousin is the third with his name and his son is the 4th, so since they ran out of nick names, they call him Quade (Like Dennis and Randy Quaid) as a nickname for the fourth, even though his given name is something totally different. His brother named his son Tripp, which I think is kind of funny since Tripp is the typical nickname for the third child with a name. So they are cousins named Tripp and Quade, which means 3 and 4.
I knew it was Russian, but I didn't know it was a nickname for Ivan. I don't think my friend knows, either... my friend's a girl  Her mom just picked it because it was different and she liked it.
I hope I'm not too late to guess...but, would it be L.A. like in Los Angeles?? My first guess was Ella too.
What? ok; I was so off! My niece has friends with the names Denver & Treasure. I knew a girl who named her kids Lacy & Misty...not too unusual, but both of them in the same family just made me think...:woot: forget what I was thinking!
I hated hated hated my own name growing up, although in recent years it has become quite popular. Kenzie. That is what my mom named me, born in 1980 and never ran across another until around 2002. Now I see them everywhere. Growing up, I wished I was a Tiffany or Melissa, but now I love my name as it stands out.
I come across this often -- American women with Russian male nicknames. I have also met an Ilya (a male name in Russia) as well as a Misha (a nickname for Mikhail -- the Russian equivalent of Michael.)
I taught a Levi once, short for Levithian. Another teacher I know taught a little girl named Arlyssa and I thought that was pretty too.
Another name I find unusual is Sedgewick. The first time I heard it I thought it was an unintentional slurring of Cedric.
A distant friend named her son, Chevrolet. And a former high school friend named her daughter Marlisa. eww...what about the names some actors come up with...Apple! ugh; ok; that's another thread.
I came across some very unusual names when I subbed in St. Louis (most of which I can't even remember anymore). I'll try to list the ones I remember: Princess (her actual name, not a nickname) Wonder (this was a boy) Mustafa (I always had to think so that I didn't call this boy Mufasa-like Lion King-on accident) Shalini We also have one unique name in my family...both my father and grandfather were/are named Bliss.
I love Apple. Ember is a great girl name I've only seen once. I have a dear friend, who is 6, named Rui (he's a boy and a charmer). I love the name Enzo, a classmate of my DD. I also saw a lot of old-fashioned names among my DDs' classmates: Josephine, Evelyn, Eleanor, Audrey....
One of my coworkers grandchildren are named Honesty and Sincere. DH's niece named her baby Heaven Leigh and my niece once worked in a bank that had customers who were twins and their names were DaWasher and DaDryer. All four of my children have unusual names.
Heaven is actually a pretty common name around here, as is Nevaeh, which is heaven spelled backwards.
There was a little girl I taught in my practicum whose name was Kenzie! I always loved that name. My best friend's son's name is Kian (pronounced Key-an)...I thought that was interesting. Not sure how she even came up with it.
A friend of mine has a friend named Rainbow Bubbles. No joke, she is on facebook if you want to look her up. If you do look it up, she is the first one that pops up on the list, not the gal with Eeyore.
