I want to make a list of tunes that use the name of a state in it. Can u please add to this post all songs you can think of? I am thinking of using them for a holiday show and want to see if i can come up with a tune for ALL fifty states! Does this already exist somewhere? HELP!

I've used the song, "Lovely Agnes," by Sally Rogers, for years. It tells a true story of Sally's grandmother, who graduated from college in 1916 with a master's degree in chemistry--and then married her sweetheart, and moved to the wilderness of Traverse City, Michigan (from Wisconsin), to run a cherry orchard. Great song, great story! You can find it on Sally's recording "Cirlcle of the Sun," or on "Closing the Distance," with Claudia Schmidt. The CD with Claudia has beautiful harmonies; both are done acapella, as the song was written in the style of an old-time ballad. They are readily available at Amazon.com.

I've used it with kindergarteners through junior high students, and at concerts for adults, as well. Everyone always loves it--and it mentions 2 states, so it's a bargain, as well!!;)

I don't know who wrote this song and I can't remember most of the words, but I remember years ago when I was interning in 5th grade, my class sang a song for a patriotic program called "Nifty Fifty" that mentioned all fifty states in one song! Wish I could tell you where to find it. Maybe someone else is familiar with this song?

    Since you mentioned it...

Hi again! Since I've already mentioned Sally Rogers, and someone else mentioned a song with the names of all 50 states, I'll pass this along, also.

Sally Rogers has recorded a song to the tune of "Yankee Doodle," which lists all 50 states. It's on her children's recording, "What Can One Little Person Do?"

It's cute, and, I think, learnable.

Oh, I just thought of another one! How about "The United States" sung to the tune of "Turkey in the Straw", by Dr. Jean Feldman. It's on her CD called Sing to Learn! It starts like this:

There are 50 states in my country,
If you sing along you will learn them with me,
We are all very proud of the red, white, and blue.
We'll start with "A" and work our way through.

Then it proceeds to list the 50 state in alphabetical order, ending with:
We can sing them, we say them, and now that we're all through,
Kiss your brain and say "Yahoo!"

(Visit her site at dr.jean.org to read all the words to this song.)

The "50 nifty" song I remember singing wasn't to either of those tunes, as far as I know... but it starts out:

    50 Nifty United States
    From 13 original colonies
50 Nifty Stars in the flag
that billow so beautifully in the breeze

Each individual state delivers a quality that is great.
Each individual state deserves a bow
    we salute them now

    50 Nifty United states
    from 13 original colonies
scout 'em, shout 'em, tell all about 'em
    one-by-one 'til we've given a day
    to every state...
    in the U.S.A.

    Alabama..... Wyoming

North, south, east ,west, in our calm, objective opinion (insert the name of your state here) is the best of the...

50 nifty United States from 13 original colonies
shout 'em, scout 'em, tell all about 'em
one-by-one til we've given a day to every state

in the good ole U...S... A.

    wow that's a long song. :)

    repertoire

Does anyone have a program/repertoire for singing songs that mention the United states. I am thinking of a medley that touches on as many of the states as possible. I dont really want patriotic- grand ole flag kind of stuff. More like what has been already posted. Rockytop tennessee tune will be stuck in my head all night! If someone has already invented this wheel, i sure could use a copy of it, either posted or mailed personally to me via email or snail. i dont know if i can pull this off before xmas vacation! ruth
