    thanks mstemple05

with the storms tonight...I keep hearing..

"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger."

Nothing like a summer thunderstorm and tornado warning to keep us on our toes.

I guess some people keep forgetting.....

"If you don't like the weather (in Chicago), just wait."

It is nothing more that personal shorthand. I learned it in college so I could take notes faster (circa 1969)

    some of my favorites...

    raining cats and dogs
    robbing peter to pay paul
killing two birds with one stone

some I never really could not visualize!

killing two birds with one stone
    preaching to the choir

    and my newest pet peeve...

"this is a good sedgeway to..."

what the heck is a sedgeway? actually spelled segue..Okay, I just looked it up. I now know it's an Italian musical term. I pretty much understood it meant a smooth transition from one thing to another..

it's understood! why say it? just annoying!!! So now, let's go to...or, This leads us to...

    hitting the sack
    calling the hogs
    getting some Z's

    good night all!

Something that we've been hearing a lot lately in the media drives me CRAZY!!!!

    Bennifer
    Bennifer 2
    Brangelina
    TomKat

Another one is when kids like to make up their own words. The other day my 8 year old told her friend that she could play when she gets all her stuffs put away. I asked her where she got that from. She said from her (13 year old) sister. Sure enough, the same day, I heard my other daughter use the word stuffs.

Another couple of words: prettyful, ginormous

"like" - as in "So he's like, looking at me and he's like, talking to his friend, and they're both like, laughing and stuff and then they're like, smiling at me.

    Ick, ick, ick.

    "Opposed to" aka "supposed to"

    He "gots" it.

    "Yous guys"

safety deposit box instead of safe deposit. or 'try and' instead of 'try to'. Someone has said my two most hated...nukular and 24/7. And the old standby, stating your pet has been spaded when it has been spayed. Gosh, there's so many! Everyone here has listed a valid one.
I've always said I don't speak English, I speak American, but I believe the language has truly deteriorated into something most people have trouble understanding at one time or another.

We should remember that prostrate and prostate are two separate things -- especially the guys!

My third graders and I have been going around and around regarding their wish to go to the liberry. I tell them that there is no such place, and they get the strangest look on their faces!

Stuffs has a long and honorable history, actually: one sees it in Beatrix Potter's "The Tailor of Gloucester", referring to different kinds of cloth. How languages change...

Text-talk is a kind of cutesy-code. It's fine if you're TEXTING, and inappropriate anywhere else. Use it in an essay in my class and I will fail you.

It's not much different than. . . .hey, remember this?

"f u cn rd this, u cd hv a gd job w/mor pay!"

Heh. There's nothing new under the sun, is there.

well, the teacher finally put in her discussion board question.

so far, all of us are writing well, remaining gramatically correct, and using capital letters!

I think we as students shall lead the pack, and the professor will have to follow suit! We know this class is serious, and hopefully, we will not fall prey to becoming too casual or lax in our writing, even though she says we can.

bad habits are hard to break...and poor writing is just bad for students and especially teachers!

I still can't believe she said, "i will write in my casul hand, so u cn see that u don't haf to be formal in bb."

    that's not casual...that's texting!

I ask my 3rd graders if they are "diamond mines" or "gold mines"

The good news is - a 4th grader corrected a kid on the playground for saying mines -- and I was lucky enough to hear him --
    there is hope!

It's not the cliches that get me.....it's the AWFUL grammar you see on tv interviews. I think EVERYONE should have to pass a simple grammar test before they can EVER be on television!!

"Yup, I seen him come outa there"

    "They done finished it"

"Him and me went over there"

God, SHOOT me now so I don't have to hear it anymore!!!!!!

well, I am ready to drop both of my college courses...

because my distingushed, Ph.D-candidate professors are constantly giving me such lovely sentences ...

"You can put your crap over here."

    (Isn't this is a Catholic school?? :eek:hmy:)

"I know this is a lot of dumb stuff I have us do."

"in blakboard..you don't haf to talk propr..I no what you mean"

"It don't matter, I know what the h*ll we need to get through...so just skip them chapters.."

Is it just me, or did I not see a cross outside the door when I came in this room!

    Lord help us!!!

    and last but not least....

Is that my neighboring Catholic High School band...

    blasting away...

    Parliment Funkadelic..

    "We Want the Funk!"

How can they get away with that??? WE couldn't get caught singing that in the hall in my high school 30 years ago!

I was amazed, and frightened, while working on Master's #2 (in Educational Administration. Almost all the classes were online. In the midst of a discussion in Principals and Personnel, one person kept writing about when you have to "higher" more teachers. He wrote this not once, mind you....but 5 times, so it was definitely NOT a typo.

In another class someone wrote about trying to "illicit" responses from her class.

These people were aiming to be PRINCIPALS!!!!

soo...they wanted to hire illicit people???

maybe literate people with principles? :)

sounds the same, must be right...

I'm guessing that is their theory...
Or, "I've been saying it like that for years...YOU don't know what you're talking about!"

I have one word for those folks...

    d-i-c-t-i-o-n-a-r-y

    everything is NOT online!

It really annoys me when people cannot pronounce numbers correctly. For instance, 20 is NOT twendee or twendy. It is twenTY. I feel an insane urge to correct anyone who mispronounces numbers.
