I have two interviews this next week, both at the school I currently work at part time at as a math interventionist.

The first interview is for positions in 1st-3rd (1 position for each grade level).

The second interview is for a 4th or 5th grade position. There is one opening for each grade.

Ideally, I'd LOVE the fifth grade job, but obviously I'd be thrilled with any of them. Other than my current position, I've never been on an elementary interview, I've only been a middle school teacher in the past. Any advice? I know I should expect questions about literacy, especially at the younger grades, but other than that I'm not certain.

They will definitely ask you questions about your classroom management techniques.

    For sure! Thanks!

I guess I should have asked if there are any grade level/band specific questions that may be asked. I feel pretty good about all the "general" questions.

Primary might go deeper into guided reading and how you plan to move kids in literacy. I would think this is especially a concern in 1st grade where they are expected to move A LOT.

    Good luck!

Guided reading and daily 5 are definitely on my "things I'm comfortable talking about" list, but I'll rehash some stuff. Thanks!

I don't teach elementary, so I have no advice, but I wanted to wish you good luck!

Differentiation, working with IEPs, Collaborating with team mates, talking with parents, dealing with angry parents, volunteering and benefiting the school as a whole, those were some of the recent things I was asked for a 2nd grade position

Thank you! The principal has told me that he wants me back, but he is also known for over-flattering...soo we'll see.

For the younger grades: parents staying after drop off, separation anxiety for the student, correcting handwriting, teaching cursive, lesson structure and length, building independence.

Good luck! I position per grade is a lot of positions.

I just interviewed for a 2nd grade position and I got asked things about dealing with upset parents, assessments, and differentiation in the classroom.

Ooh! Those are great ones. Thank you!!!!

Yes, it is a ton of positions. I'm in Wisconsin, because of the recent legislation, my school districts contracts end this year, as many teachers as possible are retiring so that they can keep their benefits (which is 3 of the openings). We also are getting SAGE funding next year.

I agree with the others, and also how you use data to drive instruction, home/school connections, and how you incorporate technology into the classroom.

    Good luck!!!

Thank you for the advice and the luck ;). I am feeling pretty good about this! Now...since it's my day off I'd really love if I could go sit in the sun and get some prep work done, but I guess it's the season of bees :(

I'll be glad when this week is done! :)

Interview one went OK. Not my best work, I got a little tongue tied once. My mother-in-law texted me to say she heard I was "funny." Good to know I guess, doesn't really buy me the job.

(Mother-in-law is a first grade teacher there; she was on the interview panel, but stepped out during my interview.)

We are always our worst critics...they know you at the school so even if your interview isn't "perfect" like you want it to be, you have an advantage that they know how awesome you are as a teacher. Keep your chin up and good luck on interview #2!! When is #2?

I hope you are right. It's hard not to over analyze! The second is tomorrow afternoon. I'm supposed to hear something by tomorrow evening already.

If you are anything like me, you will second guess everything you said from now until the cows come home. As long as you know you did the best you could, that's all that matters. They know you, and they know that you are a great teacher. They will take that into account when considering you as a candidate.

    Good luck tomorrow!!!

I constantly second guess everything I say in an interview. And of course I'm always saying "Oh man! I should have said this!!" Good luck!

Update: My second interview went WONDERFULLY!

I was supposed to know what (if any) grade had picked me last night, but the second set of interviews ended up going until almost 9 last night. I don't blame them at all for not wanting to sit around and make a decision after that, but I'm so ready to know!
