    Hi Everyone,

I am getting very frustrated that no one can give me a straight answer at any educational or government office that I call, so I was wondering if someone here may help me.

I have a standard teaching certificate for Teacher of English in NJ. I wanted to get my elementary certification. I called the TPC (teaching performance center) at my college and they told me they think that I just take the Praxis I and apply to the state for my certification. I have tried calling the office of licensure and credentials and I never get an actual person on the phone! UGH!

    Can anyone offer any help?:dizzy:

What kind of teacher education program did you go through? In Pennsylvania I know that the only way you can get elementary education certification is by going through an elementary ed. program or by going through another K-12 ed. program and getting emergency certification.

More explanation for the latter: I first got my reading specialist certification, after going through a program specifically for that. It's a K-12 certification. I added on English 7-12. I was recently hired as a 6th grade teacher, and the school will be able to add on elementary emergency certification. They would not be able to do this if I did not have a K-12 cert. already.

I know PA isn't NJ, but it might be the same over there! You should try calling them again.

In Texas once you are certified to teach you can take any certification test you want to add to your certification. Best thing to do is find away to talk to someone at your state board.
