I am a first time 5th grade teacher and I have trouble organizing my day. The school I am currently in is pretty fast paced. I reserve an hour a day for math and I am struggling with the flow and organization. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

    Quaker3,

I'm having the same problems that you're having. If you get any good information, please let me know.

I planned a weekly schedule around my specials and I stick to the schedule.

I usually do not have specials in the mornings so I do my hour and a half reading block then.

We do DOL, reading, spelling, grammar, silent read, and read aloud in the mornings.
After lunch everyday we do math for an hour. Then writing and social studies or science.

The idea is to plot out that weekly schedule (use excel to help you) and stick to it unless some variation arises.\

    Hope this helps.

This is what my schedule looks like. We also move quickly when it comes to math and reading. One more chapter in math (after this one) and we will be half way through the book (well before Christmas). I do the best I can with Science.

8-8:10 DOL (kids do it during the announcements, can't waste time!)
8:10-9 Writing (required amount of time)
    9-10 Reading and Spelling (required)
    10-10:30 DEAR (required)
10:30-11:55 Math (must have at least 70 minutes, I have 85)
    11:55-12:25 Lunch
    12:25-1:10 Science (not on Wednesdays)
1:10-1:40 Social Studies (only on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Sometimes on Friday if our "guidance" class is cancelled)
    1:40-2:10 Recess (required)
    2:10-2:20 Agenda, pack-up

I rarely get to teach Social Studies, but there is no time. I would like to move slower, but my mentor makes me keep on pace with the other classes.

We have to have 1 1/2 hours for math everyday. All teachers in our school are supposed to be using this schedule (I pretty much stick to it...It's allright, except sometimes it's hard to get the kids to focus on Science after they've had PE!)

    8:30-9:50 ELA
    9:50-10:00 BREAK
    10:00-10:30 ELA
    10:30-11:30 MATH
    11:30-12:10 LUNCH
    12:10-12:40 MATH
    12:40-1:30 HISTORY
    1:30-1:40 BREAK
    1:40-2:15 PE
    2:15-2:55 SCIENCE
    2:55-3:00 DISMISSAL

There is a fantastic book called "The Organized Teacher" I am about to order. It is $13 and some change on Amazon. It is a thick, thick book and worth every penny.

Hope that helps- I am having major problems with organization also, but I think its because I am a first year teacher with little support and my kids are slobs.
