Our county is starting to use the Treasures reading program. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions to get me started?

    Resources

Take time to look over your resources. I teach third grade and this will be year 2 with this series. I really like it. Although I am going to add in more Six Trait instruction. I felt like it was lacking in grade 3. I had to write on the covers of my resource materials because some of the story tests/weekly tests are in strange places.

Also, it is not possible to use everything mentioned in the teacher's guides. Pick and choose. You can always add to it next year.

I've used the First Grade version for two years now and find that is to sooooo painfully easy that I am supplementing it all the time.

By the end of last year I just stopped using most of the lessons and did skills that I liked from the stories.

I think it's a good skeleton - but you need to make sure you modify it to meet your students needs.

Keep in mind that it is overwhelming at first. Pick and choose what you will do and don't worry about not fitting everything in. It's too hard to try to fit in all the resources unless you have 3+ hours for literacy with nothing else to do but Treasures.

    Dislike the program.
Too much paper work and not enough simply reading!
    Too many expectations.

I use the stories for Daily 5 CAFE mini lessons.

If your district is OK with you not doing everything verbatim then it's a great program to guide you. If you're expected to do it all it is very overwhelming.

Here's a link to how I organize my Treasures Resources.
