I do a daily activity with my kids in their whole group reading block for oral language. I give them a topic and then they turn to a partner-one is assigned the pro, one the con. We've done things like a dinosaur would/wouldn't make a good pet, girls would/wouldn't make a good President. I want them to be able to make an argument for their responses-so often it's just yes or no, they need to learn to justify their thinking. :help:I'm running out of ideas. They are young, so it can't be too political but maybe something more fun they can debate. Any suggestions?
Have you seen the You be the Jury books? I am using some of them right now. It gives a simple court case, 3 pieces of evidence (with the solution in them), and the kids debate the case. My kids LOVE them!
Dog vs cat, little brother or sister, sitting in the front of the room is the best seat, Disney World is the best vacation, gym is better in the morning...
I teach debate; we start out with some simple ideas that could work for you... Chocolate is better than vanilla Cake is better than pie Recess should be 15 minutes longer (we do MS should have recess) Lunch should have dessert
Oooh! Great ideas. Thanks so much! Christy-I will definitely check out that book-sounds like something right up our alley! :thumb:
