Needed: your ideas for ways to approach teaching topic sentences

Problem: my students cannot break from writing topic sentences as titles.

    For example:

Instead of: Shampooing a dog is a tough job.
    They write: Shampooing a dog

What are some of the ways you teach your students to write topic sentences so they are complete thoughts? How did you get them to break away from writing them as titles (how did they ever get started anyway?)

    Many :thanks:

If it's any consolation, this can be an issue for adults as well. I tell people that a topic sentence or thesis statement needs to be a full sentence - and an opinion, not a fact.

My students are 2nd grade so I started them off by basically giving them the topic sentence.

I think writing a topic sentence is very difficult for my students so I provided them sentence frames that they could choose from. I basically have a chart paper with the sentence frames. These frames can be used for a variety of topics. Only problem is that you get tired of reading the same topic sentences. I basically crossed some out as I heard them over and over again and wanted kids to use new ones.

    Examples

Let me you tell you about __________________.
Let me you tell you about shampooing a dog.

I think ____________ was _____________ for many reasons.
I think shampooing a dog was tough for many reasons.

Do you know how to ____________.
I just learned facts about _______________.
My favorite _____________ is ____________ for many reasons.

Throughout the year we add on more topic sentences to the chart. A few kids came up with their own and we add them to the chart. And some kids still need to refer to the chart for ideas which is fine.

Thanks for the ideas! I like having them fill in the blanks and collecting them on a chart throughout the year- both ideas I will use...keep 'em coming- I sure do appreciate the fresh perspectives.
