    Good Morning Everyone,
I was wondering if I could get some feedback as to ageism in the education industry. I acquired my B.A. in Elementary Education in 1972; however, I never went into teaching. Instead, I secured a paralegal position in a law firm and have been working in the legal field continuously since that time. I am now in the process of winding down from that position and thinking about retirement. In that regard, I would very much like to pursue a second career in teaching by becoming a teacher's aide at an elementary school. I am still very active and I would like to do something useful in retirement for at least a few more years; however, I will be 70 years old by that time. Does anyone have any thoughts on this matter or does anyone know of someone who has transitioned to this career so late in life?

We have a teacher that retired at the end of last year and decided to come back this year as a paraprofessional. I don't see age as much of an issue as willingness to work. Sometimes you get people (not saying you) that think they want to work as a paraprofessional/teacher's aide because it is "easy." This is usually where we see the issue. As long as someone knows what they are getting into with going into the field, age shouldn't play any part at all.

If you can deal with the physical demands, go for it.

The other option that might end up being easier to get into is subbing. We are always looking for subs in my district. That might be a good way to stay active, but still enjoy retirement if you want a day off.

There’s an aide who is 75 and still going strong, but she’s worked there her entire career.

If you want to work as an aide, it wouldn’t hurt to apply.

Thank you for all of your kind and helpful comments. I especially like the suggestion regarding substituting. That might be a way to get myself back into the "swing of things" before committing to a full time position. Thank you very much. You have all been very helpful

Last year, we had a 90-year old teacher's aide work with a student who required an individual aide in an 8:1:1. She has officially retired and moved to Florida.
I heard she pursued a career in a day care somewhere in Florida.

There is absolutely nobody who is too old to work in a school. There are, however, some individuals who are merely "too lazy". Age and willingness/ability to perform are two different things. As long as you want to do the job and are able to perform the required tasks, go for it!
