I've been trying to make almost all posters/displays this summer and not buy anything. I've been using Word Publisher and making posters.

I saw this little poem somewhere on the web and I liked what the teacher did with it. She had the poem, then had library pocket charts under that with certain "tired" words. In each pocket chart were slips of paper with better choices. The student could go over to the board and take the slips out and find something to use. I loved the idea so much, I made my own poster...at least almost done.

I also found a site that had "Dead Words" and a list of synonyms, but I've since lost the site.

    Anyway, just wanted to share.

I can't find my camera, or I'd post. (Where is my camera? I've been looking for it for days.)

Tired words want to go to sleep,
Let them rest! Don’t make a peep!
Try to use a synonym instead,
Let these tired words stay in bed!

I finally finished it, and it does look nice. I put it on two black foam boards, side by side horizontally. I'm going to hot glue it to the wall under the window where the rug is. They can go sit on the rug with their stories and look for the words to change.

I didn't really want to say "dead" words because I want them to use them occasionally. I remember a paper a student wrote that described a two-year-old character. The author wrote "He was just bad. You know, that awful kind of bad that makes you run for your life." I liked it, and wouldn't have wanted him to exchange the word "bad" for something else.

And I found my camera! It was in the glove compartment of the car. So now I have to figure out how to post pictures.

What a fabulous idea! I may need to retire some old posters to make room for this!
