We don't often miss for snow, but we get hurricane days, flood days, tornado days, and ice days pretty regularly. Usually 3-5 a year. This year we didn't get any.

I worked in a district that required us to go back in late July and start school in early August. It's true that we do get snow days (some years more, some years fewer), but we also had long breaks built into the school year - a week in the fall, two weeks in the winter, and two weeks in the spring). We also got out well before Memorial Day most years. Personally, I didn't mind going back in July if it meant having all of that time off during the year.

"Allowed" snow days are the number of days past the state-required minimum days that a school is already scheduled to be in session. For example, in my state, districts are required to be in session for 174 days. My district schedules 176 days as a rule. This means that we can have up to two snow days that don't need to be made up. If we have more snow days than that, then we have to add on days to the end of the year. Teachers have to make up the days regardless because they are paying us to work them, but the kids only need to make up anything more than two snow days.

The length of the school year also comes into play with start and stop dates. We have 187 instructional days with students and 7 Professional Activity Days that occur during the school year (not before school begins).

I've never heard of anywhere doing this! What do you have to do- go in for an extra work day? I'd be so annoyed.

My dad's school does have the teachers make them up, but ONLY if they go over the 5 allowed days. The students then start doing their "blizzard bags" things (which the teachers still have to put together, so one could argue they're still doing the work) and then the teachers have to make up the days at the end of the year. Last year they had 6 days so the teachers had to make up 1, and they made them do a wiffle ball game and other children's activities throughout the day. They were livid.

They are used for a variety of things.

Two years ago, we had a collaboration day where our grade-level team met to plan out things for the upcoming year. It was actually nice to have because our teams had been mixed up and, while some of us were still in the same grade level, we hadn’t all worked together as a team before.

This year we have three days. It depends on what you teach, but it’s either used for PD, curriculum writing, or intentional work that has either been assigned or approved by an administrator.

We never have open work days where we choose what to do when we are making up a snow day. We always have a previously approved agenda dictating how we spend our time. To be honest, I don’t mind it so much. I’d rather have make up days without students than with them. And I’d rather get this work done now than be asked to come in during June or July. They often ask us to come in and write curriculum or attend PD over the summer. We get extra pay for the optional work that happens, whereas we are only getting our regular pay for mandatory work when it happens on make-up days. Obviously, I’d rather just be on summer break already, but it could be worse. They just want to hold us accountable to taxpayers. If they are paying us for 180 days, they want us to work 180 days. I don’t like it, but I get it.

Not counting today the students have 7.5 days; teachers have 9 days. The end is almost...almost....almost in sight.

The plus for you is that when August rolls around and most people here are griping about going back, you get to sit back poolside with an adult beverage in your hand and remark that your summer still has weeks to go!

That's how I see it. I can't imagine going back to school in August. Back to school always means September for me. I have a Facebook friend who goes back July 22nd

Last day for students is Thursday. Staff has to go for a half day Friday, but it's mostly just socializing if we're done with everything we need to be done with.... [Which I will be....] Starts up again Sept 5.

I love graduation, but I hate those freaking hoods---I can never get it on right!!
