Looks like it's time to get a new laptop. The battery has been shot for awhile, but it's been fine plugged in. However, the past day, even plugged in, I'm getting battery low messages and the display keeps shutting off (it's happened 4 times in the past 30 minutes). It's 4 years old, so replacing the battery doesn't make sense. Just dread having to "start over" with a new one.

I know that feeling, Mrs. C. I have two laptops sitting around, both with dead screens. I really need to get a new one and consolidate those two.

I love starting over with a new laptop! We get a new one every two or three years at the Black Friday sales. Thinking about doing it again this year.

Do you know what kind you'll be getting?

If you don't want a Macbook, HP is nice. I have one of their mini laptops that I've had for over 2 yrs & no problems so far. I know that's not very long. My mom loves her HP desktop.

I was just going to ask what kind you are considering. I have an Asus 15 inch which works great. I also have a smaller Acer Chromebook which is very portable. I can't print from it, though. I had trouble with my HP and with a Lenova. But, I buy from Best Buy and always get the extended warranty. They Geek Squad rocks.

I really dislike my HP. It has been buggy ever since I got it. I prefer Toshiba; you get a lot for a low price.

My brothers HP of 4 years just went kaput this morning. My nephew's hasn't lasted 1 year.

I'm saving up for a MacBook Pro. I have one for work and now I want a personal one. I could never justify the extra cost until I actually had the opportunity to use one. Oh, and until Windows 8 came out. (I'm not a fan.)

I really haven't started looking yet. The two laptops I've owned have both been Acers and the battery has been the only trouble they've ever given me. My son had a Toshiba for about 6 years, then bought himself a Lenovo, which he loves! While I covet a MacBook Air, it's too steep a learning curve for me right now (I've never used an Apple). I'll have to start looking at options tomorrow--hmmm, touch screen or not?

MrsC, my district gave teachers a choice between Macbooks and Acers for our 1-to-1. My school were told to get Acers by the principal at the time. Well, the battery life was awful. My laptop would only last for 20 minutes unplugged. When we were told that we got to get new laptops this year, we all chose Macbooks.

My brother just bought a Asus today. He said that their motherboard (whatever that means) has an excellent reputation.

I love my Macbook Pro. I got it a couple of months ago, and had no real Mac experience up to that time. You learn it fast!

Same for me - it's pretty user friendly, so it's not too hard to pick up. One of my favorite things is the battery life. My computer is a couple months over a year old and the battery still lasts around 5-6 hours. It's amazing!

I had my first MacBook for 9 years, with the occasional OS upgrade. It still worked when I gave it away, but it couldn't be upgraded anymore and newer apps weren't compatible.

I've had this one for 3 years, and it's still going strong. Though they're more expensive, I think the cost evens out with their longevity.

Plus, they're super easy to use!

Got an HP Pavilion with a touch screen. It has a 14" screen and is nice and light for carrying back and forth to school every day. I was able to get Office 2010 through the school board for $14; that's downloaded and installed. Now I'm just trying to learn how to navigate around Windows 8.
