Hello everyone! Currently I am a substitute in a school district on L.I. The news broke that they are laying off 26 faculty and staff, so getting a full time teaching job in this district, or anytime soon, will not be happening (L.I is a very tough place to land a job regardless.) Unfortunately, as much as I love subbing (excellent experience), I do not get benefits (I have less than a year left under my dads insurance bc I am during 26 early next year) and the work is very inconsistent. With that being said, I am so ready to have my own classroom and students. I have applied to NYC (last year and this year) but find there are never any jobs posted on the New Teacher Finder. Of course I will continue to look on there within the next few months but I am just wondering, what are your thoughts on charter schools? I always see job postings for this one charter school called the Voice Charter School but am a little skeptical about applying- do you have any experience with charter schools in NY or elsewhere?* *The new mayor is against charter schools and is trying to close them
What is your certification in if it's elem ed 1-6 you are probably not going to find something in the NYCDOE, sadly so unless it's special ed or ESL (there's a hiring freeze). There was a lack of jobs on the new teacher finder last year which sucked. When applying to Charter Schools just do your research. Google them. Read insideschools.org and greatschools reviews. Look at their school websites. I can definitely name a few to stay away from (I have interviewed at a few and know people who have worked in some). If you want to score a job in a NYC Charter now is the time to apply, there was already 2 jobs fairs I went to and most schools are hiring now or by May the latest. Yes some will hire over the summer but it's slim pickings. I PM'ed you with other info.
Thank you! And I am certified elementary and special ed birth to grade 6... Hopefully they have some jobs this year!
You have a better chance in finding something in special ed for sure. Email your résumé directly to principals in public schools don't wait for listings on the new teacher finder.
Well, I can't really help you on charters in NY specifically, but I do have charter experience. I got hired at a charter in southern CA (another major charter hub, like the NYC area is I think) 2 years ago and am still there. I have absolutely loved my time there. I got a job at another charter because I wanted to move about 400 miles away. I didn't specifically apply to charters either time, but that's what worked out the first time. The second time, I actually started out leaning a little more towards charters because I have had such a positive experience. I agree with Bunnie - when applying to charters, do your research. In CA, I try to stick with charters that have at least several years of successful experience - schools that have a good history already built up. My current charter, for example, has been open for over 20 years. That is a LONG time and not super realistic in other parts of the country, but any kind of history helps. How established is the school? I then look at their mission/goals/who they are and see if I align with that. The great thing about charters is that those things are usually VERY clear on their website, at least around here. Do you agree with what is important to them? If not, it probably won't be a good fit. Can you see yourself teaching there? Do you align with their philosophy? I have no idea about job searching in NY, but if you do want to e-mail principals, I would imagine you could find e-mail addresses on specific charter schools' websites. The thing about charters is that they really want to hire people who are committed to THEIR particular school's philosophy and mission. If you do your homework, find out what this is, and express your interest in it and how you can contribute to it, you already have a leg up on people who are just applying to random schools to apply.
You both have been extremely helpful!!! I will certainly do my research and look into each schools mission statement and reviews!
I have an old List of all DOE principal emails. I double checked each schools doe's website to see if the principal has changed, some websites list the principals email. Sometimes I simply googled the principals full name and their DOE email would pop up. I'll PM you the list.
