I am thinking of decorating my classroom next year, and that's a major change for me. I've always taught middle school or high school, but this year and hopefully next year as well, I am teaching life skills special education. It's what some would call a special day class. The kids are at early elementary for academics, but a few are at preschool level.

My classroom looks like a prison right now. I can't stand it. I know bright colors are overstimulating to those with autism, but I've seen some really calm looking decoration lines come out lately. I was always against decorating because I saw it as a waste of money and unnecessary. My kids are spending the whole day in the same room and they deserve something to look at.

So, does anyone have any ideas or thoughts?

Oooohhhh. I know some teachers like you are a lot better at decorating. That sounds perfect though. Well, except for my plant allergy :) I'd love to see pictures if anyone has ideas. Until recently, it was hard to find decorations that aren't babyish.

If you're allowed to paint, do a calming blue or green. That's what I did in my room.

Have the students help you decorate. We make paper cut outs for different holidays etc and they put them on the wall with blue tape. In winter we hang tons of glittery whites and blues from the ceiling since it doesn't actually snow here.

I teach high school but they still love it because many of then don't have that experience at home. I'm amazed at how many kids don't know how to cut a heart, or have never had their house decorated while growing up. It makes using class time worth it.
