As I have mentioned, my school is sending me to the Reading Institute at Columbia University this summer. I am so excited! Luckily I will have enough time in the afternoons and evenings to do some sightseeing and touristy things. Any suggestions on what to do/see, where to go while there? I am taking my sister with me. Here is a list we have compiled so far:

    Gigi: $83 per person
    NY tour bus
Empire State Building: $32 per person
    Go to macy’s
    Go to Tiffany’s
    Visit the Brooklyn Bridge?
    SOHO art district

    Any other suggestions?

    YES! Also
Subway surf - take subway all the way to Brighton Beach - This will mean a train switch and worth it. Get off and stick toes into Atlantic Ocean.

Also - buy local paper and see what cultural events happening right up there by the university. Some great classical music concerts free.
Oh yeah, and of course Staten Island ferry.

Oh, the workshop alone will be great, but the city will also offer you so much - Have fun! :)

Really, the 9/11 tribute and museum should be high on the list of things to do. Ellis Island is worth the trip, Times Square is almost impossible to miss, see what is gong to be at Radio City Music Hall, or Madison Square Garden, ride a water taxi, take a dinner cruise around Manhattan, several are available, and, from a personal point of view, I would skip the Brooklyn Bridge - so many things that are somewhat more interactive and entertaining. If there are any children in your life, visit FAO Schwartz; shoot, visit just for the kid in you. Do your research - some sites are safest during daylight, while others shine at night. It is impossible to be in the city that never sleeps and be bored.

Thanks everyone for your great idea! I'm attending a week-long institute, so I hope I have enough energy in the afternoons to do everything I would like to do!
