We had our kindergarten "shadow day" today. It's basically a meeting for the parents, and the incoming kindergartners go to the library to do a project with our LMS, lit specialist, and some other helpers. At the end, the parents pick up the kids and they walk through our classrooms.

I cannot get over how tiny the kids were!!! I know it's always a shock at the beginning of the year, but they were just tiny little babes. My kiddos looked like giants compared to them. It makes me scared for the beginning of the year again...I've realized how far my kids have come.

Just wanted to share my shock.

Pigeon, you should see my kiddos. I have kids who have turned 3during the course of the school year (coming out of EI, but are way too little to be in our blended preK class!!!), and i have some little peanuts! I have a few that barely are up to my knees. They do a GREAT job at school... but it's hard getting the 5th and 6th graders to not refer to them as babies! :)

It's always a shock at the beginning of the year, because you dont' always realize how much your kids have grown until you see the next crop!

We have PreK in our building so I am used to seeing the 4 year olds in the hallways. I know exactly what you mean. Every time my class passes the PreK in the halls I am amazed at how big my kids are. On the other hand though, my kids were with the first graders last week for a project and I was amazed at how little my K kids looked. It is amazing how much bigger the 1st graders were.

I agree! I was talking to some of my kids from last year in the hallway today and I realized they are BEASTS! I have to start doing the turn thing when they hug me, or their heads go directly to an inappropriate place!

    one of the little joys

One of the little joys of teaching elementary school is watching the children grow. I look at the 5th graders and try to remember them as little 5 year olds.

That's so true! I thought that the other day as the PreK class was walking by. At the school where I am now, my first Kinder class there is now headed to 5th Grade! I agree it's fun to watch them grow-even to look at pictures of my class in the beginning of the year-they've changed so much!
