We have to create a theme unit this year for each quarter (4 total). I'm not talking themes like Fairy Tales, Author Studies, etc. They have to be more broad and cover all subjects.

    So far I'm thinking...
    1. Change
    2. Perseverance
    3. Independence??

Any more ideas? I can't find a list online. This is 3rd grade too btw.

These are great...anyone do units with these themes for a whole quarter integrating all subjects or using the theme within all subjects. Would love to bounce some ideas off someone

I'm sorry; I haven't. But, if I were you, I'd start right here on AtoZ. Click on the theme button at the top. Those themes may not be there, but you could adapt another, or just get ideas. Sounds like fun.

    Power, systems, rules.

Is your school basing or using this based on GATE?

Oh my goodness. I'm completely stumped. Are you partnering/teaming with someone at school to help you with this? How about something that incorporates friendship.

Does it have to be character-oriented? Could it be something more like Our World or Our Neighborhood?

Our senior year English classes had 4 themes throughout the year (one per semester) based on the Classics:

    Epic
    Tragedy
    Comedy
    Lyrical

I don't know if that would be too hard for 3rd Graders to understand ..?

The whole school is doing it..but we only have one class K-8, so while themes could be similar the content wont be. I'm actually on my own this summer too for the first one b/c I'm working at a summer camp in Maine...so that's pretty far from Indiana. It doesn't have to be character based but that seems easiest....

I'm trying to think of my science/ss standards..I feel like reading is easy to get in.

    So this may help
    SS
    1. Native Americans and early Indiana Settlers
    2. Geography (Continents, Oceans,Midwest, Great Lakes)
    3. Government (local,state,national...branches...) National Symbols
    4. Economics

    Science
    1. Scientific Process
    2. Rocks and Minerals
    3. Plants
    4. Sound and Light

Movement (people build towns where they find resources)

We All Need Water (transportation, drinking, farming, cleaning)

Our Buddy the Sun (without it there is no life; I just worked with a middle schooler on writing a song on this topic to the tune of You Are My Sunshine, so it is on my brain!)

Living Together (all kinds of biomes and communities)

What We Need Vs. What We Want

Those are great...but I'm suppose to have more broad theme...boo lol!

So again the courage ( I was thinking SS unit of n.americans/settlers would fit there)
change (I was thinking putting the rock unit under this quarter b/c rocks change in the rock cycle, through weathering etc.)

Change would work for all areas, really. Settlers change location for various reasons. Even in English you could relate it to editing and discuss how characters change. Technology has changed life ... I think you have a winner there.
