Good luck!! So, as a beginner who's thinking about doing a half in October, what are some of the things you do before a big run like that to prepare? Foods you eat? Do you still run, but shorter distances?
Thanks guys!!! It was brutally hot here (98) and my sister-in-law and I wound up walking the majority of the race... we fought blisters, sun, heat, and insanity but crossed the finish line in 8 hours. Yes, I said 8 hours!!!!! I followed Jeff Galloway's Training for any length race. Here's the training schedule for the half http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/half_marathon.html Before the race I had my normal prerace dinner of baked potatoes with margarine, bacon, cheese, and sour cream. My pre-race breakfast is oatmeal with blueberries and peanut butter. I drank LOTS and LOTS of water. I'm planning on keeping with my running routine but scaling it back a lot. I would like to stay at half marathon endurance but my husband and I would like to start trying for a baby so we'll see what the Dr. says.
That's great that you finished it!!! That's really tough when it's that hot. I just finished the first week of a half marathon training plan this week. I don't have long till the race, so I found a 12 week training plan and started on week 8. I just did a 10 mile run today. I usually run at about a 10 minute mile pace, but I was around 11:30 per mile today. It was so hot! I got up late and didn't start until 10:40. I need to go a lot earlier next weekend. The plan I'm doing is: Monday-rest Tuesday-4 miles Wednesday-6 miles Thursday-4 miles Friday-rest Saturday-4 miles Sunday-10 (and each week I add another mile, so 11 next week) Some of the weeks change a little bit. But I liked this one because it was 5 days a week and the rest days are Monday and Friday. I know those are the days I won't want to run once school starts, so it was a good fit for me.
That's awesome!!! I want to do a Dirty Dash close to my house but the entry fees are a little steep for me.... but they look like so much FUN!
My friend and I signed up to do the Color Run. We're doing the run in Sacramento, so if any other AtoZ teachers are out there..... make sure to look for me!
Awesome. Peechy....when is it? I'm doing it here Aug 25th. Saturday I'm doing Rebel Race. I'm not nearly as prepared as id like to be but I'm sure it will be a fun time!
I've been seeing a lot of my friends on Facebook posting pictures from the Color Run. I don't think we have one here-it looks like fun though!
Our Color Run is Saturday! However, I'm recovering from having my wisdom teeth removed, so I won't be totally focused on running the whole way. Just having fun!
I really want to do that one! I think my next obstacle run is going to be Dirty Girl...an easy one but we should have a huge group so that will make it fun
I did the half marathon today! I was kind of slow, but I ran/jogged the entire time. It took me 2 hours and 27 minutes.
Awesome, Far!!! cza~congrats!! I'm signed up to do another 5K Oct. 6. Maybe after doing that one, I'll be ready for the 10K coming up in Feb.
Just found out about this running app. If you're into zombies, then this app might motivate you to run! It is normally 7.99 but it's on sale for $2.99. Just wanted to share my fun find. https://www.zombiesrungame.com
So I'm bumping this thread back up because with new year means new year resoutions and I'm hoping that some of you are either resuming your runs or considering becoming a runner!! I am starting week two of my half marathon plan. My first half race is in April. Until then, I am signed up for a couple of other races. In two weeks I have a 10k to support local music programs in schools. In Feb I plan to run a 15k. In March I'm running a Color Run type race in Modesto. In April is my half and I also plan to run a 5k trail run to support something about firefighters???? (have to look into it). What are your guys' plans and future races?
I'm still running also. I've been doing a little less than I was before though. I'm running 3 miles a day during the week and 4-6 a day on Saturday and Sunday, so around 20-22 a week instead of 25-30 like I did when my husband was deployed. I'm running 6 days a week and have been taking Mondays off. I'm also doing Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred workout video every day. I did Level 2 Day 3 today. I don't have any races planned. Warrior Dash is coming up soon, but I think I'm going to skip it this year. I still have scars from when I fell down a wall last year!
Wow.... congrats guys for keeping it up. Far, you're dong way more than I am right now! My training plan has me run 4 days a week, 3 miles 3 days, and the long runs are increasing, starting with 4 miles, and increasing 1 mile each week. I heard of the Warrior Dash, it looks a bit intense for me. STG, good luck on your 10k! That is no easy feat, there. I'm nervous about my 10k in two weeks and I've ran 6 miles many times before. Racing it though scares me. I know I will be last in place. Oh well. I can only get better.
Peach~I know I will never be the fastest person in my age division so I just go for completion. As long as I finish, I don't care what time I do it in! Far~that's great about the running! I do about 3 miles 3x week. I would love to do the Warrior Dash when it comes around again! s
