I don't use it the first week and neither does our K but they do a project that maybe you could still use.

They read the Gingerbread Man and each K class makes a cardboard gingerbread boy/girl. They decorate it and vote on a name. Then one morning he "runs away." The staff pass him from room to room and anyone who get his writes a letter to the K class or takes a picture of him with their class, etc. But before that class or that staff member manages to return it to the K class, he "runs away" again. Now at the beginning of the year, involving other classes would probably be a bit much to ask. However, maybe you could use the non classroom staff? And do it as a way of introducing the students in your room to those staff memebers?

You could have him "run away" to different areas of the building. Leaving clues. That way you could do a school tour.

For a welcome theme you could do a cookie jar, or cookie tray with a title something like "A great batch of kids" or something and each cookie has a kids name on it.
