I'm currently reading The Book Whisperer, and I absolutely love it. The school I'll be working at next year has implemented the type of philosophy and program in that book, and I couldn't be more excited about it. It's going to be a dream come true for me to be able to teach that way.

Anyone else read it? And if so, do you run your class that way?

    I'm just curious! :)

I read it last summer. (Wonderful book!) I've been so transient lately, so I never really implemented it.

It did help me justify things I had previously done in my mind. I always wondered if I allowed independent reading too much because I enjoyed it as a child (and now!) so much. I was always worried that someone would question me about it. I know have proof to back me up!!

It changed not only the opportunities I give them to just read but also inspired me to read more! That book was really an inspiration for me in a lot of ways.

I read it 3 years ago. It is one of the most inspiring educational books I have read. It has helped me to teach students to love literature. I owe a lot to that book.

I read it last summer and immediately included 20-30 minutes of silent reading into my classroom a day.

What things are you doing in your classroom that was inspired by the book?

I am looking for more ideas. Book commercials seems easily implemented (I just never did them this year). The journaling seems worthwhile, just time consuming- checking them, giving worthwhile feedback? Challenging the kids to read 50 books in a school year would be cool. I am looking to add more of "Book Whisperer" into my classroom next year, just don't know where to start.

I have not read the book but the idea sounds good… Now just need to grow my classroom library to include books that would interest them!

I also am a bit anxious as to what holds them accountable during this kind of thing? If I just let them read books of interest what do I use for assessment etc?

Read the book and it will address all of your questions :)
I'd tell you, but she tells it much better!

    I will take a look :)

It looked like this could definitely be used with middle school kids right?

Fascinating book! It inspired me to completely overhaul our fifth grade curriculum a few years ago. I haven't looked back since!!! :thumb:

AH, I am very excited! :) My new principal runs the school by the philosophy in the book, and I couldn't be more thrilled.
