Does anyone else have students who overuse this phrase? I am so tired of it! They use it to complain about something the don't like, as in "We have a test today? That's some booty!" So funny how you learn so much about trends when you teach middle school.
Oh yeah....my 7th graders say the weirdest stuff. For some reason they say "Bob Saget" when they dont like something. Like... "I made a 50?" "Bob Saget!!!'.
Nope, haven't heard that one here in PA. They like to tell me I'm drawin. As in, "We have to do all this work? Man you're drawin." Which basically means I'm annoying.
I'm impressed that kids still know who Bob Sagat is! Makes me feel not so old since he was someone more well known in my childhood.
never heard of either of those! I'm just glad I don't hear "Word!" and the double fist pound to the chest, kiss peace sign and hold hand out to someone anymore.
AWWWW Snap! That's beasty! but..that's some booty is a new one. although I'm in Ohio as well. I hear all kinds of strange things.
this post made me LOL. the school i was at a few years ago had kids who would CONSTANTLY tell me 'that's booty.' i forgot how much i hate that phrase.
The only thing I can think of that explains the Bob Saget line is a series of web videos about an unfortunate man nicknamed Tourette's Guy, but I believe his real name is Danny. As the name belies, Danny suffers from a terrible case of Tourette's Syndrome as well as raging alcoholism. The videos have a ton of profanities, but the craziest part was that when Danny actually wanted to curse, it inevitably came out as a strangulated "BOB SAGET!" There were rumors that Danny died or was at least faking his symptoms for the camera. However, my husband and I ran into him two years ago. He was drunk at 10am and talking incoherently but quietly, as if he couldn't control himself. Rockhubby and I were flabbergasted.
I have never heard a reference to "booty." And, unless we were somehow talking about pirates, I would be sufficiently unhappy that I doubt I would hear it twice.
I've not heard the booty line. During my internship, our middle schoolers used "gay" and "racist" for things they didn't like. "We have homework tonight? That's racist." I finally told them they obviously had no idea what the word really meant and - if I heard it again - they would have to write a two-page essay on the meaning and history of racism. They found a new word to start using. I personally like "snap". It's a lot better than the word it replaces. Kids can use it in the same manner without getting themselves in trouble. Slang will always be part of kid's vocabulary. I often enjoy the creativity they put into some times (when it is clever). Several years ago, I heard the word NAPA had become popular teen slang for a good looking girl, because she had all the right parts in all the right places. (taken from the NAPA Auto Parts slogan at that time). I haven't heard the Bob Saget phrase either, but given the fact that this generation is definitely an internet culture, I would imagine it does come from the Tourette's Guy videos on YouTube. While the intent behind the word may not be great, it's another one I think is better than the alternative.
I hear alot of "epic". Also, I hear "that's gay" or "that's racist" a lot too. I have heard kids use "that's some booty" but usually they are referring to a girl's behind
I know why they say Bob Saget, but its not nice. I could show you if you really want to know. Lots of cursing in the video.
I wonder if the Bob Saget line is in reference to the fact that he is a very raw and sexually raunchy comedian. He used to get in a lot of trouble during the shooting of Full House because of his cussing and sexually lewd remarks. He would have to be constantly reminded that there were children on the set. It's ironic that he made a name for himself in the family television business since he is NO WAY a family friendly performer by nature.
After watching a couple of the videos, I seriously question whether the man really has Tourette's or is just a drunken a** with no social or personal filter. Most Tourette patients have physical tics in addition to the phonic tic. TG doesn't show those symptoms. Also, the phonic tic is usually the same words or phrases uttered unvoluntarily (it can be temporarily suppressed, so it isn't involuntary). The phonic tics are usually inappropriate to the situation. TG's outbursts are in direct response to the situation. A Tourette will normally spout the word or phrase out of nowhere. I'm not a psychologist and I certainly don't know TG's personal history. But I have studied and observed human behavior (both as a course of study and personally) and, frankly, TG just strikes me as a belligerent drunk who says the first rude and offensive thing he can think of, which is asymptomatic of Tourette's.
LOL! That's another of my favorites. At least the kid is taking responsibility that he/she is the one who messed up. Unless, of course, they're being a smart-aleck about "I should have known you wouldn't let me go to the bathroom again - my bad."
Urban Dictionary has the booty entry but no etymology. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=That's booty I don't think I'd let kids say that since booty is backside and booty call is sexual. My kids precede every question with "Wait, what?" I've been trying to break them of this by telling them not to talk about my weight!!!
