I passed!!! Yay! I really think the questioning helped...the questions on the real test were a bit harder But the notecards helped.
I am taking the ESL Texes 154 supplemental in a couple days.. I'm worried. should I be? Anybody have any study materials they would be willing to share? Advice?
I'm taking the ESL on 4/15--I've taken the practice test available in the prep materials--but would like something else to study--any suggestions???
I couldn't find a study guide. I am going through an alternative cert program and they prepped us with a full-length practice test. I missed 14 on that. I took the practice test on the ETS website and missed 4. I took the real deal on April 4. I felt that the test was difficult. I circled about 15 questions that I was not sure about. I'm hoping that ten of those are the throw-out questions! Know the terms -- ESL plus, overgeneralization, etc. and know how to apply the knowledge -- there were many scenarios on the real thing. Moderator -- I hope I am not "sharing" too much here...Please edit if needed. Thanks!
Thanks Prekyay! It has been so hard to get any advice for this test. My ACP program did not give a practice test--so other than the material we had in the class, I'm clueless as to what to expect. Did you take the PBT or CBT version? Please let me know how long it takes to get results--I take my test on the 15th.
I took the pbt. The scores are supposed to be posted on April 27. I am assuming you are taking cbt, so you will know your scores before I know mine! Good luck. I have talked to several friends who took the cbt and they felt the same way I did after taking my pbt...we had no idea how we did! It's just crazy. But, they passed, so there is hope! You will do fine, and so will I!
By the way, those who took cpt said they had their results in 24 hours! That's the way to go! (or less stressful)
Hello to all, I am new to this website and excited to find local educators who are in the process or who have taken the ESL 154. I recently took the test and made a 236, ugh! However, I did research some of the information and found valuable details for when I retake the test on May 29. Although training was completed online through Region 4, there were many topics that were never covered. Is there anyone who is available to study via phone or in person? I live in Cypress and my schedule is flexible. Thank you Talare
That's scary--I just finished my training on line through Region 4 in February. Care to share what topics weren't covered? I take the ESL tomorrow 4/15. If I don't pass--I'm all for getting together to study! I'm in the Spring area--so not too far.
I took the test yesterday and I agree--it was much harder than I expected. I found the EC-4 to be much easier, of course, I know I put a lot more effort into studying for that one. So far--no scores yet, I'm thinking it will be like the EC-4, they only post once a week. It's figuring out which day!
Thanks I know I need it and I will do the same for you. I'm staying positive--any news on yours yet?? Didn't you take the PBT?
The prayers are on their way!! I'm sure you did great. I missed twice as many on this test than I did on the EC-4 and really thought I'd be retaking it.
I took the esl with my ec-4 and I still have not got the scores. I'm so nervous, because I am really not sure about the esl section. I just have to hope that my ec-4 will pull me up enough. But, otherwise I totally messed up by taking them together. I'm so nervous.
Just got my score and I passed the esl/ec-4!!! I'm so happy. I was really unsure and then I got a 95%! Wow don't know how that happened.
Congrats! me too! Whew! The waiting for 3 weeks was the worst, wasn't it? I'm beginning to wonder why we all sweat this stuff so much. We just don't give ourselves enough credit.
I'm only just beginning on this ESL. I just recently passed the EC-4. I wish I would have known I needed ESL. I could have take the EC-4 with the esl. Live and Learn I guess. I'm not from Texas (just moved here) so I'm learning as I go through trial and lots of error. The job market is tough!
I understand your frustration. If it's any consolation, I think it helped me to take them separately. I know it's more $$, though, so that part is a bummer.
Hello Everyone, I wanted to share with you that I passed the ESL test! The next step is to become hired as a teacher of record or I may have to take a break from work to complete a clinical.
Thank you so much TeacherGroupie. Also, I attended a job fair today and was offered a job on the spot. Passing the ESL has really boosted my confidence and has made me more attractive academically.
TExES ESL Supplemental 154 Hello, all. I've been reading the blogs for two days and finally decided to join in. Is there anyone who lives or works around the University of Houston(Central Campus) who would like to study with me? Is there anyone who took the test recently who could share some tips? There is just so much to read, and I'm afraid that if I study too hard, I will read too much into the questions and fail. Please help. I'm taking the test on August 29, 2009.
I just signed up to take my ESL test on July 15. I'm nervous about it. I don't feel like the study material I have has well prepared me. All I can do is continue to study up until the time and stay hopeful.
Taking the ESL in a month! I just registered to take the ESL Supplemental on Aug 2nd. I am using the preparation manual that the state supplied onlne but I really need more help. I can't get over how hard it is. Anyone have any advice as to a study guide I can get to help me? Please!!!!:woot:
Study group, anyone? I'm taking my test on August 29, 2009 in the Houston area. I'm willing to share my notes with you.
Purple--I took the ESL in May and all I used were my study notes from my ACP class. Answer all questions in the best interest of the student as if you were teaching in a "perfect" classroom atmosphere.
I studied by searching information online. For example, the competencies listed information that should be known, but did not specify where to find it. Conducting my own online searches provided me with detailed and thorough information. For example, if you are unfamiliar with LPAC, google or yahoo it and you may find a PP that was complied explaining everything.
Thanks, Talare for your advice, which gave me great confidence. I had already been studying the different sites, so I'll continue. For those who are asking for a particular sight, from what I gather, that's virtually impossible. There are so many companies who are trying to make a buck, but the state doesn't endorse any of them. There is a plethora of free information that you can obtain, just by googling the topic. So, we just have to find a way to disseminate the compentencies and study. It seems to me that the best approach would be to research by content and stay focused on that particular area. For instance, yesterday I told myself that I would know everything I needed to know about BICS and CALP. So, I googled them and studied everything on them. There is no released test like they do for TAKS. As far as I'm concerned, Talare is an expert. Let's face it, she's passed.
Is this test you are discussing Texas' version of the Praxis (I know ETS has been kicked out of a lot of places--unfortunately my state is not one of them!) Purple, those are the kinds of things I studied as well (for the Praxis)--BICS and CALP, Krashen, you know the things you might expect to be on an ESL exam because they are fundamental. I feel like I have a really good handle on ESL theory and best practices but unfortunately the test did not seem to rate those things as very important--lol. My dad actually asked if I had taken the right test (ha!) I kind of wished there had been an essay portion instead of the whole thing being multiple choice. Hopefully one day my state will create its own test that is more relevant to teaching.
