I am elementary, so I am totally out of my realm with this question. Is the norm to do a term paper in 11th grade as well as 12th? It used to be a "senior" project. Just wondering if this is another "sign of the times"-everything is being pushed back, or if it is common. As early childhood, I witness how kindergarten is now first grade and so on. Just wondering if it is the same all the way up.

Depends on the level he is at. I was in Honor and AP classes, and we were expected to do a term paper.

I did term papers starting in the 8th grade, though they got more complex as the years went by. I graduated HS in 93, btw.

I wrote term papers each year beginning in the 8th grade. It doesn't seem unreasonable to me to expect students in an English class to be able to write a solid paper by the end of each year.

Yeah, I started term papers in 6th grade and did one every year. I graduated high school in '05 to give you a time reference.

You may want to check your state's standards. My 7th & 8th graders write numerous papers (research, persuasive, narrative, response to literature). California state standards say they should be writing these at 500-700 words each. Our 9th grade standards jump up to 1500 words.

At my school all of the 11th graders do a research paper. I think it was scheduled that year instead of 12th because by their senior year some kids are less than fully motivated.

Paper due at the end of the term using a style created by the teacher on a bad day (usually combing the most hated parts of MLS, APA and Chicago).

I think more people are moving towards research papers and projects now, but as others have posted, they are starting those as early as middle school.

For as long as I've been teaching high school, the expectation has been that all high school English classes include a research paper during the year.

Thanks for the imput. Sorry about the "term paper" reference. That's what it was called when I was in school; I keep forgetting that I'm 110!

Heck, I'm 115 and keep referring to my never-ending thesis as a term paper. Drives my adviser insane.

As much as i like assigning term papers, its hard to read these kids papers. 90% of these kids have absolutely NO IDEA how to write properly.

I do. I take a day OUT of regular history instruction to teach them how to write a basic thesis/paper/, citations, etc. It just sucks that I have to do that because some of their English teachers do not, and let them get away with garbage papers.

So yes, I agree, we do need teach them those skills.

Good for you for trying. One of my pet peeves has been that English teachers teach how to write, but few of the other teachers require complete sentences, much less realistic papers.

Right now in my district, the 8th grade language arts teachers and social studies teachers are working together to teach students how to write a good research paper, how to cite, references, and etc.

Worse than that are the teachers who dont do any writing assignments at all because, "the kids cant do it anyway." I mean we all get discouraged but they have to do at LEAST one.

Nowadays, tearchers preferred to give lots of research paper that term paper and as a student I am aware that it's part of academic requirements. So I'm here researching for new topics on my research tragedy.
