So I picked up 5 notes today that my angelic students were passing in class today and I just read them. Three of them said the same thing: a username of somesort and a password. The username is not an email address (which is what most places like MySpace uses), just a series of letters and numbers. Any clues?? We may be needing to cut off computer lab time...

All those places require email addresses I think.

AOL sign on does not need to have the @AOL part to sign on. Also, a lot of chat rooms just have a used ID of some sort. Is their one child in the group that you know well and might tell you what it is just so you can find out if it is a real problem?

You might ask their parents if they know what the usernames/passwords were for.

That was my first thought. If nothing else, they could fish it from them.

I'll keep fishing. I don't really know where the notes originated. The only thing I can find on the internet is that part of the username is related to Japanese Anime, which is really big in our class right now. Thanks everyone.

There are MANY websites that require username and password to enter, and most of them do not require the email address to sign in. Of those many sites, there is a HUGE percentage that are, ummm, shall we say, ummm, adult in nature? and totally inappropriate for children.

It could be that the kids are swapping the information for use on their home computers (that generally don't have a good firewall or child protection system).

Oooooh, Japanese anime! There are some really cool anime sites out there, but there are also some pornographic ones as well. It's a shame that everything has to have a tainted side to it, isn't it?

Can you get into the history of the computer and see what websites the kids have been on?

Also for other possibilities: message boards and online gaming (the shoot-to-kill games, not poker, though you never know).
