Well, one of my favorite reading skills is featured in reading this week...main idea and supporting details! :eek:hmy: My kids do very well writing paragraphs with a topic sentence and details, but usually struggle to transfer that skill to other paragraphs that they read.

I'm trying to come up with some "at your desk" activities for tomorrow and the next day. I was thinking about typing the sentences of a paragraph and cutting them out so they are on separate slips of paper. Then they have to sort to find topic sentence, details, and things that I include but don't belong.

Got any more ideas to share???

Highlight the main idea in one color and details in another.

Give a list of sentences and have students group them together, then write a main idea for each group. (For example---give them 9 sentences that could be arranged into 3 groups.)

Outline their hand and write the main idea on the palm and then the details on the fingers.

I do this one with my kids as well. It makes them stop and think as well...you can teach them that if they aren't able to come up with any/many details that support what they've written on the palm, then what they've written isn't the main idea!

Some great ideas--I'm marking this thread so I can use these later!
