My best tip for grammar is that when you teach subjects and predicates, always have them identify the verb first, then the subject. It seems easier for them to do this way.

    Have a good year!!

Start the year making mistakes in your written morning messages to the class. You can call on students to fix mistakes or have them fix them themselves on their whiteboards. Hold them accountable for correcting their own errors. They'll catch on quick once they realize they'll have to to fix their work every time they leave out punctuation/uppercase. I play lots of games on my portal website using the smartboard. "Punctuation Penguins" is a lot of fun and "Sentence Clubhouse." The kids love them.
