Our 5th grade class is going on a field trip that is 3 hours away. They get back well into the evening. The teacher has always gone but this year she has an evening family obligation so cannot. The 3rd grade teacher offered to go in her place by swapping responsibilities that day. But admin said no without reason because they do not have to give one. They told her to use a personal day which means a substitute would take them 3 hours away. I do not see any reason the 3rd grade teacher could not go other than

The odd thing is that everyone swaps teachers for one day in the winter just for fun.

    I guess I'm just surprised.

So your principal is going to have a substitute... take a group of children on a field trip... which lasts until long after school... when another staff member was willing and able to go.

    ...

Your principal sounds like an idiot.

Definitely agree with this....it makes no sense to have a stranger take them when someone that is affiliated with the school (and has probably had some of the 5th grade students in the past) is willing and able to take responsibility. :dizzy:

EXACTLY my thought. She wouldn't need a sub either so both classes would end up with an in school professional.

Seems a control issue to me.

Would the sub get paid extra for working past normal time? I don't know that a sub would willingly do that.

I know if it were my district, they'd have to pay me the hourly rate rather than just the daily, so it'd end up being more expensive for the district, anyway!

Sounds like something you'd see on a sitcom.

WOW! When I was subbing they pulled another teacher to go on the field trip (not 3hrs away) and still had me go. I had never met the kids before.

I hope the P changes his mind.

When I was subbing I got paid bell to bell, unless the school paid me outside that time. (this meant that all before and after school duties were unpaid obligations.)

In my area, it wouldn't fly to ask a sub to work outside of school hours (they need to be at school for 15 minutes before and after the end of the school day).

I'm not sure what they will do about the after hours thing.
Probably charge the teacher with 1.5 days.

The fifth grade teacher needs to contact her union/organization. She shouldn't have to use a personal day because she has something after school hours. I'd pitch a fit.

It sounds like maybe your principal should be accompanying the grade 5s on their field trip.
