J Crew! I know it isn't for the classroom exactly, but with an ID (perhaps a stub, but they ask for an ID) you can get a 15% discount. I love JCrew so I was pretty excited when I found out about that. Too bad Banana Republic doesn't do it too!
My apartment when I first signed up gave me 25 off for being a student and then 25 off for being a teacher. YEA!
I would think that most places would indeed accept a pay stub, assuming that it states your position as a teacher. I once went to a bookstore that was having an educator week--I didn't have my ID, but they accepted my MEA insurance card.
Just last weekend I discovered that I get 20% off my Tmobil bill for being a teacher...well, for being a "government worker" because I work at a charter school!
AT&T gives a discount..I'm not sure if this was said already. I went into Borders or B&N I forget, and when I went to the register I asked the clerk what I had to show/tell to get the discount. He told me the mere fact that I asked what I needed to show proved I was a teacher and that was good enough for him. We don't get ID cards, so I'm using my paystub. Big Lots is having our teacher day locally tomorrow 8/1. I'm gonna go check it out.
Photo ID Paystub Copy of contract Letter on school letterhead that you are a teacher there Once you get one discount card, most places will use that card to give you theirs. Walden accepted my Barnes and Noble Card as proof, and Office Depot accepted my Walden's card as proof.
I wonder if you can have this applied to an existing contract, or if it renews it for another two years?
Here's another one that I found out about yesterday- Pat Catan's craft store is doing 10% off of your entire purchase for teachers on Tuesdays in August.
Speaking of homes, if you go for a HUD home, they have the Good Neighbor Next Door program. Teachers (and a few other professions) can receive 50% off the already discounted price of these forclosed homes. We are looking into it and there are some really great houses in our area.
This list was great! As a new teacher, I had no clue all these discounts existed! I do know that you just need to ask around. I know a local restaurant in our town gives discounts for teacher's and military. I'm just gonna start asking everywhere I go (if I remember!).
AT&T question For those who have the AT&T discount, how did you go about getting the discount? I called the main customer service line to ask about it, and the CSR was very helpful, but he knew nothing about it. He said that if he found out, he would be sure to tell his mother-in-law, as she is a teacher too!
I'd go to an AT&T store and ask. When my mom signed up, she mentioned that she works for the school (as a secretary) and they told her she qualified for the discount.
The Limited and Ann Taylor Loft (going to ask H&M and New York and Co as well on my next shopping spree).
Sea World If any of you live in the state of Florida, you receive a free annual pass to Seaworld. You have to show your teaching certification and a current pay stub.
Woo-Hooooo!! I knew about the Loft Loves Teachers program, but I didn't know The Limited gave discounts to teachers, too! :woot:
