I've heard rumors that teachers can get discounts on _everything_. Naturally, I don't believe this, but my aunt has told my family that she'll go to places like best buy and tell people she's a teacher (which she is not) and get discounts on electronics. Is there any truth to this? What, if anything can teachers get discounts off--and does it apply to anything outside the classroom? (Man after some of my ST days I would have loved to go to a spa and say "I'm a teacher and I need a spa mani/pedi lik crazy!")

Also are there any sites that offer discounts to educators or those trying to get into the field? The only one I know of is www.journeyed.com

I know there's more- I really should look into it more b/c they don't always advertise it and you kind of have to know to ask, but the ones I know for sure are:

    New York and Company
    Apple
    Books-A-Million
    J. Crew

You have to show your school id or pay stub though- so you would have to be presently employed and they're likely not going to take your word for it. At NY and Company they let me show my id from last year (for some reason I didn't have the current one on me, but the old one was in my wallet) but the lady very sternly told me they usually wouldn't accept that and I needed to bring the current one in next time. My best friend's school doesn't give out id for teachers so she always brings along a pay stub and that works for her.

I have not heard of best buy discounts- I can't imagine they'd offer one as really most things you'd be buying there are for personal use. I think the clothing stores (I know there's more) typically do teacher discounts out of sympathy b/c teachers have to buy a professional wardrobe but don't make the salary that other professionals that have to dress that way do. You can use it for anything you're buying in the store though, in my experience.

here is a website that lists quite a few stores that offer discounts. I have gotten a discount at the office type stores (staples, office max), barnes and noble, Micheals, lakeshore learning, and some clothing stores. Like someone above mentioned, they are usually pretty specific on showing a current id or paystub.

OMG I had no idea all the places that gave teacher discounts. I knew about Barnes & Noble's and Borders but I had no idea about NY and Company or Ann Taylor Loft! Luckily I did remember to take my ID card home with me for the summer but it doesn't have a year on it. All it says is my name, school, faculty, and has my picture. Do you think they'd still accept this?

I would definitely try to bring in your sub paystub. They will probably only look to see that it is from a school and not that you are subbing.

Banana Republic does too, there's isn't advertised anywhere, but I think it's 10 or 15 percent.

The American Mattress near me offers a 10% teacher discount. I don't know if they all do it though. The salesperson told me it was because we're in a college town.

I would bring a pay stub in along with the id just in case.

At the LOFT you can do it online, then they give you a coupon you can print out and use in the store. Sometimes they just accept the ID but there have been times where they've wanted to see the coupon. (Which is dumb because really anyone could go online and fill out the information and get the coupon.) Check for it on their website. They do a lot of teacher promotions.

I think Verizon does the discount on cell phone plans for teachers too. At least in my area.
