I am looking for a new teacher bag. What would you recommend?
I love my, and many of my colleagues carry, Vera Bradley bags.
After looking everywhere online a few years ago (and bags are expensive), I settled on the Cindy tote from 31 gifts. One of my fellow teachers sells them.
It is big enough for a laptop, notebook, a couple of novels, and papers (on the rare occasion I bring them home to grade). I also have a small zippered bag in there with pens, etc. The pocket on the side is big enough for a bottle of water.
I had my initials embroidered on it. I've been using it for three years and it still looks pretty new. I think it was 80 some odd dollars after embroidery and taxes, etc.
I love my Vera Bradley backpack! It stands the test of time unlike just about any other produt I've owned. They have cute totes, too, but I like the feel of a backpack. http://www.verabradley.com/category/bags/totes.uts
I have a really large Vera Bradley tote I've used for 3 years now. It's just now looking slightly worn on the handles and the bottom. It is big enough for all of my folders, laptop, lunch, sweater, and extra shoes. Yes, it's big, but I'm not carrying 6 bags-just one. Btw, I never carry my purse. I just grab my wallet.
I just bought a Vera messenger bag this summer from eBay for only $15 including shipping. I washed it and it looks as good as new! It's smaller and more manageable. Looking forward to using it.
I have a Vera Bradley laptop tote that I really like.
I have a Vera Bradley bag as well! The bigger one, called "Vera Tote" with the 6 interior pockets. I actually use it as my weekend-getaway bag sometimes! I love all the pockets and it's big enough for my laptop plus books. I used it a couple times in grad school too.
I plan on using it as a diaper bag too when I have a baby
Anything Timbuk2 will get you street cred in the SF Bay Area.
Their classic messenger bag is bomb-proof. Mine has been through multiple bike crashes and still looks brand new.
Seatbelt bags are extremely sturdy:
I switch between my Vera tote and a bag I got on Zazzle.
I have one of the Thirty-One Organizing Utility totes. I love it! I've had it for 3 or 4 years now. It's starting to show it's age a little. I'm not even sure if they still carry that style. For me, it's all about function. Cute is a nice extra, but I need it to have space, pockets, and a sturdyness factor. I'm also not willing to spend a fortune on it.
I have the Vera Bradley "Get Carried Away" tote. It's huge, but I like being able to carry all of my stuff in one bag rather than several small bags. I can keep my regular purse, lunchbox, laptop, jacket, and gym bag in it and still have room leftover. I've had it for 3 years and no signs of wear and tear yet. You can also throw it in the washing machine if it starts to look dingy.
I have this bag as well. I've carried it to/from school every day for four years, and it shows no signs of breaking down anytime soon. It was a great investment!
I use a canvas grocery bag.
I have a Vera Bradley laptop tote. I've had it for 7 or 8 years and use it every day. I still get compliments on it. It looks brand new.
I went with a solid color, not the floral patterns. It is like this one except without the trim. http://www.verabradley.com/product/...50006&Nr=AND(Content+Type:product)&Ntt=laptop
I need a bag that zips, because we have had bedbug issues at school.
I just bought a Tek bag; not the cutest thing out there, but it zips, has 3 outside pockets (umbrella, water bottle, and folder for things to do immediately is what I wanted them for), and is waterproof and large. It is normally about $90 but it was on sale at Kohl's and I had a 30% off coupon!
I carry a Coach diaper bag. It has a million little sections for organizing and is big enough for my laptop plus stuff.

I love that tote, thanks for sharing!
I have a laptop tote from Target. It's black faux leather and starting to show it's age. I think this year I'll go back to my sub bag which is by Scout. My print is vertical blue/green/white stripes. I love all of the pockets on the outside.
My sister-in-law gave me a woven market bag a couple of years ago. The style is like this but much larger--about 40cm tall, 34cm wide and 15cm deep. It's made from recycled materials and is very strong. The handles are long enough for me to sling it over my shoulder if I need to. I love it!

I use a Lands End tote bag. It's very sturdy.
I have a Thirty one bag and it's pretty good. I've used it for about 2 years and it's holding up great.
Wow! Lots to choose from so I will look into these! Thanks everyone!
I'm a guy, so my bag is not particularly cute or feminine. I use an Aerostich bag designed for motorcycle couriers. I've used it for at least ten years and it isn't even remotely close to being worn out. $80 bucks, if you're into function over form.

Another vote for Vera Bradley! They have so many cute prints to choose from, and as an extra bonus, they're washable. I also really like how roomy they are, and the pockets keep me organized. I just got a messenger bag from Vera Bradley to use for my teacher things and already love it. I also use a Vera Bradley lunch box.
QVC has Vera Bradley bags on sale http://www.qvc.com/shoes-&-handbags/vera-bradley/_/N-lhcsZuopyZ1z141eo/c.html
I just bought this one, http://images.qvc.com/is/image/a/93...889&scl=1.8834745762711864&fmt=jpeg&id=qI7bI0 for $68

I have been wanting one of these for years, but I haven't splurged yet:
they are make in Europe out of these huge tarps they drape on the side of box trucks (instead of painting the trucks lie they do here) and seat belts. They are practically indestructible and each one is completely unique.
However, I recently received a Michael Kors tote bag for my birthday and it is great, looks like this but its gray:
