I agree dfleming-I had an aggressive bipolar child once who walked around tearing all the heads of the stuffed animals in the room. I had a student once who ended up with 5 different diagnoses including ODD, autism and bipolar. He would run out of the room, throw everything off my desk, pull all the kids' work down of the walls. Was it frustrating-of course, was my admin supportive-no, but not only did I never lose my cool, I managed to create a classroom community where the kids would still be friends with them.

There is nothing a child can do that would deserve the way that child was treated (unfortunately I have seen the video many times as it is on a loop on the local news here). Beyond causing physical and psychological harm to that child, it's a terrible example to be setting for the other kids. If you get upset with someone, just beat them up. You're the adult-there's no excuse.

I agree with dfleming and the others - there really is NO EXCUSE for this woman behaving this way. This was never any type of "discipline", this was an ATTACK from the very start. The teachers literally throws a desk out of her way and crouches into a fighting stance as she approaches the kid. She doesn't just slap him (repeatedly), she drags him around the floor and KICKS him too. She deserves to be in jail for what she did and, hopefully, that is going to happen.

As for admin "returning these kids to the classroom", what else are they supposed to do? The kids are already attending an "at risk" school, which means they have likely been kicked out of the regular schools in the area. I've subbed several times at our own "alternative" school. ALL of these kids are there because they are behavior problems. One day I had an extra free period because every student in that class was scheduled to be in court that day. (and they were all female).

I admit I was worried about controlling the kids there, especially the boys. All the kids are middle and high school age. But, to my surprise, behavior really isn't as much of a problem as I thought it would be. Yeah, the kids are bad to "mouth off" to each other and even cuss in front of me. I just remind them that type of language isn't appropriate or tolerated in the classroom and they have to SHOW respect (to me and others) if they want to GET respect. It's a two-way street.

Anyway, it would be interesting to know exactly what the kid did to the girl that made this teacher snap so bad, but it doesn't matter. No matter WHAT it was, the teacher was wrong and doesn't need to be teaching anymore. It also sounds like she needs to be taking some anger management as well.

No excuse period. No ones fault but her own. You make decisions everyday on how you choose to behave. "pushed to that point" oh please, if you were then there's something wrong with you.

If a person gets to this point, don't they feel it coming? She should have realized that she was at a breaking point and gotten some help! No excuse!

What I am most upset is with the comments people have made on the article link Major posted. It just makes my stomach turn with reading that this kid deserved it because he was in an alternative school (and possibly had disabilities)

Studies show kids with disabilities are physically harmed the most in school. The south uses corporal punishment and the ones that have problems are sent to the office the most.

That teacher in texas needs to go. Glad to see that it might happen.

I don't remember anyone (other than the teacher's lawyer) remotely suggesting the kid deserved to be attacked by the teacher. Everyone here has agreed the teacher needs to go and most feel she needs to go to jail (do not pass Go, do not collect $200).

As for corporal punishment, there are a total of 20 states that still allow it; 11 are in the South, but 9 of them are not. So it is almost, but not quite, a 50/50 split. (Source: Corporal Punishment in Public Schools by State

As for kids with problems being sent to the office, it is more correct to say kids that cause problems are sent to the office more often. Teachers are trained to handle most classroom disruptions and are expected to handle all but the most serious problems themselves. If a child is sent to the office, it is almost always because the teacher has exhausted all other options or the kid has committed an offense that requires an immediate trip to the principal.

Do you have a link to the studies showing kids with disabilities are physically harmed most often in schools? It would be interesting to see the data and determine the causes for the harm they suffered.

I think Icare is referring to another site, with comments, posted by Major. Not comments made by anyone here.

Icare, I posted a Houston Chronicle link which discussed the teacher's actions, and had a video of her "apology."

I don't think anyone (AtoZ members) here made any comments that suggest the kid deserved a beating. Could you point out the comments you are referring to. (Maybe I don't understand your reply)

Icare was not referring to this site, but to the comments on the link Major posted. And, I went and read them- pretty disheartening.

I did say I would like to know what the kid did (or said) to the girl that made the teacher snap, but also said it doesn't really matter because there is no excuse for her to attack a child.

As kcjo suggested, I believe Icare was referring to the comments stated on the actual article link that you posted. Below the article, I can see the comments that Icare was talking about. I don't think Icare was talking about AtoZ members. Hope this helps.

Nothing will make you lose faith in humanity more quickly than reading the comments section of the Houston Chronicle... It's almost a running joke among the locals. The craziest of the crazy seem to post there. Sometimes I think that they are just purposefully being incendiary, but sadly, I think most of the times, they are legitimate.

And it doesn't matter *what* the article is about, someone in the Chron comments section will turn it into a rage against minorities. It can be an article about... pandas... and someone will find a way to turn it against immigration. Unfortunately, it makes Houstonians look like a bunch of backwards yokels.

Oh yes please everyone I meant the comments people left on that link. NOT anyone here! Thank you to the ones who noticed and said something. I would feel awful if you all thought I was criticizing you all, which I am not.

Someone asked for the link to the study that showed most kids with Disabilities get physically harmed or receive corporal punishment the most.... I have it somewhere but it will take me a bit to find it. When I do I promise to post it.

The comments after the story made me sicker than the story. I am sure that there is parts we don't know, but the woman was out of control. The way she took the animal stance and went after that child. And then she kept saying how does it feel to be hit by a woman. She was not a woman, she was an animal.

Understood. I was not singling you out. It's just that people are always saying "inner-city schools" are this, that, or the other (always negative), when their depictions may be totally inaccurate.
