I spent a lot of money this year trying to build up my classroom library, buy supplies that I needed and other miscellaneous items for the classroom. I am wondering how I can itemize these expenses on my taxes? I read somewhere that I can put the expenses into unreinbursed employee expenses, is this true? Is there a catch? Any advice will help!

You can also itemize and put the money you spent above 250 into that section, under business expenses I believe...

The $250 is really easy; there is a line on the 1040 for it.

Other expenses go under "unreimbursed business expenses" if you itemize. I forget if there is a % of income threshold that you have to hit for that.

Was anyone else told to wait to file their taxes until after Feb.3 if they claimed teacher expenses???
    Just wondering.

The line to deduct the $250 is not on the tax forms this year. It was expiring this tax year and while congress did vote to extend the tax break, it was too late for the IRS to add the line onto the forms. So if you do your taxes online, you'll be fine. If you actually use the paper forms, there will be another way to claim the educator expenses deduction. Since I do itemize my deductions, I take the $250 off the top and put the rest under business expenses.

According to the IRS link I posted, you can claim the deduction for 2006 on line 23...

I have heard of teachers using some expenses (consumables mostly) as donation deductions. I don't itemize, so I only take the $250.
