Has anyone here used tangible symbol systems or some derivative in your classroom? Specifically, object schedules? It's been recommended by a communication specialist that I implement object schedule and tangible symbols with a student, and I would love some feedback on how it works for you. It sounds good on paper and trickier when I look at my classroom.

For example, what do you put the objects for your schedule in? Is it better that they be in some kind of receptacle, or velcroed onto a more 2-dimensional surface? Do your student(s) bring the objects with them to each activity? If so do they leave them there or put them back? (I have articles recommending each of these mutually exclusive procedures!)

I'd love to hear any input, b/c I'm off to try and create some object symbols for my students before school starts! :)

    Hi,
I use a picture schedule in my class but have used an object schedule for lower functioning students. I just picked objects that went along with a center. For example, snack time, I used a small cup. Circle time an old CD. Placed them on the students schedule with velco to make it easier for them to remove from the schedule and then place on the spot in the center.

I leave the objects in the center until that center is over then put away. I started the student with one or two objects on the schedule at a time. Added more as needed. It does take time to do this........maybe you have an assistant who could be in charge of putting them up there before the next center.

    Hope this helps :)

So you attached your objects to the same picture schedule as you use for the rest of the class? Is each center labelled with the object already, or is the object only there when the student brings it from the schedule?

    thanks for your input :)

Each of my students have their own schedule. Each center is labeled with the same object...........and then with a picture for those other students. I hope that this makes sense to you.

Let me know if I can help in any other way.
