Well, I am nervous. I'm taking the cbest on the 17th (next Sat.) I did the first practice test, and did fine on the reading comp. When I took the 2nd practice test, I did worse!! I thought I did better. So now, I'm nervous. I wasn't nervous about the reading (just the math- I did better than I thought on the practice test...go figure).
Any last minute tips to calm my fears?? I'm not really sure how to judge my essays, either. Thanks!

Which first practice test? Or do you mean the sections of the practice test online?

Be aware that this is a test of skills that, on one level or another, you pretty much have to have had in place in order to get through college. It's not a particularly sneaky test, as these things go.

As to the writing, the essays are standard high-school five-paragraph compositions, or as close as a reasonably skilled writer could come in an hour or less. What the scorers are looking for is laid out fairly clearly on the CBEST Web site: essays that state a clear thesis and then make their point, that show organization, that show a decent respect for the conventions of formal written English, and that show a decent respect for the intelligence of an audience of educated people.

If you happen to know a high school composition teacher, this would be a good time to call in a favor: have that teacher read your practice essays.

Oh, and one more thing, jd123: breathe, please.

FWIW a lot of folks pass CBEST without any preparation. I did. It ain't rocket science.

At this point in time, a week from the test, IMHO there isn't a lot you can do that will make much of a difference. Just make sure you know how to write a passable 5 paragraph essay. Then relax. If you pass, you pass. If not, you will know what to expect next time.

Thanks! I'm sure I'm working too hard at making myself crazy and nervous.

Here's a tip: Treat yourself as kindly and gently as you'd treat a friend of yours who was getting worked up over this test.

    The test is quite reasonable.

Just relax, exercise common sense when you take the test. You should be fine.
